Add & Subtract Polynomials

The document discusses adding and subtracting polynomials. It defines like terms as monomials with the same variables and exponents but possibly different coefficients. To add polynomials, like terms are combined by adding their coefficients. To subtract polynomials, the subtrahend terms have their signs changed and then the polynomials are added. Examples are provided to demonstrate both adding and subtracting polynomials step-by-step according to the rules.

Adding Like Terms
Like Terms
Like Terms refers to monomials that have the same
variable(s) but may have different coefficients. The
variables in the terms must have the same powers.

Which terms are like? 3a2b, 4ab2, 3ab, -5ab2

4ab2 and -5ab2 are like.

Even though the others have the same variables, the

exponents are not the same.
3a2b = 3aab, which is different from 4ab2 = 4abb.
Like Terms
Constants are like terms.

Which terms are like? 2x, -3, 5b, 0

-3 and 0 are like.

Which terms are like? 3x, 2x2, 4, x

3x and x are like.

Which terms are like? 2wx, w, 3x, 4xw

2wx and 4xw are like.

RULES IN ADDING POLYNOMIALS
1. Combine the like terms by adding their
numerical coefficients.
2. In adding the numerical coefficients,
you have to consider the rules in adding
integers.
a. LIKE SIGS, add then copy the common sign
and literal coefficients.
B. UNLIKE SIGS, subtract then copy the sign
of the greater value and copy the literal
coefficients.
Adding Polynomials
Find the sum.
1. 8c + 9c = 17c

2. 4xy + 8xy = 12xy

3. 18yz + (-4yz) = 14yz

4. 2 + (-7 )= -5
Adding Polynomials

5. 6 +3 = 9

6. x + (-13x = -12x

7. -3 + (-4 = -3 -4
Adding Polynomials

8. (5x – 10) + (-3x – 13)

5x – 10
+ -3x – 13
2x – 23
9. (5 + 2 + 4x – 10) + (4 -8 - x - 12)
5 +2 + 4x – 10
+4 - 8 - x – 12
-6 - 3x - 22
RULES IN SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS

1. Keep the minuend.

2. Change the minus into plus.
3. Change the signs of the subtrahend.
4. Follow the rules of adding polynomials.
Subtracting Polynomials
Find the difference.
1. 8c - 9c = 8c + (-9c) = -c

2. 4xy - 8xy = 4xy + (-8xy) = -4xy

3. 18yz - (-4yz) = 18yz + 4yz = 22yz

4. 2 - (-7 )= 2 +7 =9
Subtracting Polynomials

5. 6 -3 = 6 + (-3 )
= 3

6. x - (-13x = x + 13x
= 14x

7. -3 - (-4 = -3 +4
Subtracting Polynomials

8. (5x – 10) - (-3x – 13)

5x – 10
+ 3x + 13
8x + 3
9. (5 + 2 + 4x – 10) - (4 -8 - x - 12)
5 + 2 + 4x – 10
+ -4 + 8 + x + 12
+ 10 + 5x +22
