That is why I’m inviting you things. Then, we could
and my cousin. watch together.

pick you up at 6. Will that be have great time together.
okay?

Answer the questions about the dialogue above.

1. Who are talking in the dialgoue?
2. What does Grace want to do?
3. Why did Grace invite Polly and her cousin to the mall?

LET’S STUDY THIS

Read the following sentences taken from the dialogue. What are the
underlined words?
I am thinking of going to the mall.
Do you want to come along?
We will sure have a great time together.

The underlined words in the sentences are called personal pronouns. They
are used as word substitutes for nouns. In the examples, I takes the place of
“Grace,” you substitutes for “Polly”, and We represents both “Grace and
Polly.”
Take note also that the pronouns do not always refer to the same noun or
person. The meaning of a personal pronoun depends on who is speaking. So
the pronoun I in “I need to buy some things does not take the place of
“Grace” because I refers to “Polly” who is the one speaking.
Personal pronouns represent specific people or things. We use them
depending on:
 number: singular (example: I) or plural (example: we)
 person: 1st person (example: I), 2nd person (example: you) or 3rd
person (example: he)
 gender: male (example: he), female (example: she) or neuter
(example: it)
 case: subject (example: we) or object (example: us)
We use personal pronouns in place of the person or people that we are talking
about.
Examples:
a. My name is Josef. I am six years old
b. Catherine goes to school early everyday. She is always punctual.
c. Josef and Catherine love to play board games. They enjoy playing chess
together.
d. My mother, father and I are leaving our old house in Tacloban City. We
will move to Quezon City soon.
e. The cat wants to nap on the mat. It does not eat a rat.

LET’S DO THIS
Read the selection on the next page and take note of the personal pronouns
used.

School Risk Management:

9 Classroom Safety Tips
by Gibson

Students and teachers spend most of their school days in

classrooms. Thanks to hardworking and creative teachers, who
transform classrooms into welcoming educational environments. They
make an empty space attractive and inviting for learners.

But with such high use and so much going on, classrooms also
need to remain safe because these are the places where students can
learn and teachers can teach without worrying about getting hurt in an
accident.

So as a teacher prepare his or her room for the start of school

and maintain them throughout the year, he or she should be aware of
the dangers lurking in the classroom.

Teachers should display simple safety precautions meant to

prevent injuries and remind everybody on what to do in case of an
emergency.

Consider sharing these nine (9) classroom safety tips with your
teachers to help build a safe and secure environment:

1. Keep Exits Clear. Make sure all classroom exits—both doors

and windows—remain clear from obstructions and clutter.
2. Safe Ladder Use. When putting up decorations or accessing
materials on high shelves, you should always use a ladder.
3. Hang Decorations Properly. Avoid hanging things from light
fixtures and sprinkler heads. Do not block exit signs or obstruct
any exits with your decorations.
4. Keep Hazardous Materials Out Of Reach. Hazardous
materials, such as cleaning supplies and chemicals used for
instruction, should be properly labeled and securely stored.
5. Eliminate Tripping Hazards. We do not leave unattended
9. Post An Evacuation Plan Near The Door. Ensure all students
are familiar with the exit routes in case of emergency. Post a
resource for evacuations in the room.
