ANALYSIS: Are you satisfied with the quality of the argument? Is


the argument coherent/plausible? Is it clear, detailed,
35 points and properly substantiated? Does the essay engage
with any objections/counter-arguments? How strong/
sustained is this critical engagement?
EVIDENCE: How well does the essay handle the textual evidence?
Does the student engage with the relevant course
30 points literature? Is this engagement adequate? Does the
essay demonstrate a strong understanding of the
relevant course literature? Are there any
misrepresentations of other scholars’ views/
arguments? Does the student analyze the textual
evidence and show awareness of its subtleties?
ORGANISATION: Is the essay well-organized? Is there a clear and
specific thesis statement? Is the essay well-structured?
15 points Paragraphs ordered logically? Is there a clear and
concise introduction that lays out the trajectory of the
paper and the steps the student will follow to develop
their argument? Are there any paragraphs that are
poorly linked to the preceding ones or any paragraphs
that are not related to the thesis statement and the
argument plan presented in the introduction? Is there a
clear and concise conclusion that summarizes the main
argument?
STYLE: Are there major grammar/word choice/syntax
15 points problems? Is the student’s writing clear?

Referencing & Does the paper follow the Chicago Manual of Style?
Bibliography Does each citation include page numbers for the
passages being discussed? Please note that you could
5 points lose points under the evidence category if your essay
does not adequately cite the literature. Also, please
note that presenting others’ views as yours, even if
they have been paraphrased, is considered plagiarism.

Total Assignment Mark: 100
