Unit 5 Peh

This document provides information on identifying categories of injuries and applying first aid. The objectives are to identify the category of injury sustained and apply appropriate first aid. It then defines injuries as damaged tissues or organs from trauma or force. It discusses acute injuries from a specific impact and chronic injuries from overuse. It also covers factors and risks of injuries, and strategies to prevent injuries like a comprehensive training program, protective equipment, recovery, and sportsmanship.

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

• identify the category of injury sustained;

• apply appropriate first-aid on the injury.

Let’s
Injuries are damaged tissues or organs which occur when it encounters
warm up!
trauma or physical force that is greater than what it can resist or
absorb. The tissues can withstand varying degrees of stress and strain,
but it will break down if it experiences an impact that is stronger than
what it can tolerate.

INJURIES
which occur when it encounters trauma or
physical force that is greater than what it can
resist or absorb.
ACUTE INJURIES – usually the result of a specific
impact or traumatic event that occurs in a specific area
of the body, such as a muscle, bone, or joint.
Sprains - an overstretched ligament.

Strains - caused by excessive stretching that

causes tears in the muscle-tendon unit.
Fractures - are breaks in the continuity of the
bone.

Dislocations - are bones that are pushed out from

their joint capsule.
Functions of Various Musculoskeletal Structures

STRUCTURE FUNCTION ACUTE INJURY

Ligaments Stabilize joints Sprain
Tendons Attaches muscles to bones Strain
Muscles Creates movements Sprain
Bones Anchor for muscles Fracture
Joints Fulcrum for movement Dislocation
CHRONIC INJURIES – are often
referred to as overuse injuries;
resulting from overusing one body
area while playing a sport or
exercising in a long period.
Stress fractures(muscle-tendon unit) - a small crack in
a bone, or severe bruising within a bone.

Osteoarthritis(joint)- occurs when the protective

cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down
over time.

Bursitis(fluid-filled sac) – is a painful condition that affects

the small, fluid-filled sacs – called bursae.
Factors
and
Risks
of
Injuries
RISK FACTORS
- are classified as non-modifiable and
modifiable.

- some experts classify risk factors as

intrinsic or extrinsic.
Injury Prevention
STRATEGIES TO MINIMIZE THE
OCCURRENCE INJURIES

1. Adopt a Comprehensive Training Program

- goes beyond addressing the fitness parameters such as
aerobic capacity and strength.

- contains the right exercise and proper execution as well as

posture, corrective exercises, core exercises, stability
exercises, and other exercises that will improve
neuromuscular efficiency.

OCCURRENCE INJURIES

2. Use protective equipment and practice correct

technique
- playing a sport or game can be prevented by using some
protective equipment.

- an individual should also learn the correct technique to

avoid injury.
STRATEGIES TO MINIMIZE THE
OCCURRENCE INJURIES

3. Incorporate recovery strategies in the training

program
- recovery provides the body time to rebuild broken
musculoskeletal structures.

OCCURRENCE INJURIES

4. Follow the rules and decorum during

competition
- it is important to practice sportsmanship and to resolve
conflict without resulting in violence.
- it is understandable that officials will make judgment errors
regarding the game, but this should not spark violent outbursts
from the players.
Minimizing
Injuries
While
Training
Proper Attire- the attire should be appropriate for the chosen activity.
It is important to consider comfort and protection when choosing an appropriate
attire.
Proper Technique- an individual needs to consult a trainer and ask
for proper instruction in performing the chosen activity or exercise.
Gym Etiquette- Individuals that subscribe to gym facilities should be
aware of the rules and etiquette.

Proper Environmental Conditions- It is advisable to

check the environmental conditions before the exercise session. It is possible that
the area or the weather is not conducive to the activity.
Adequate Recovery- It is important to provide the body with
adequate and proper nutrition to recover.

Choose the Right Kind of Shoes - Shoes are essential in

preventing injuries while playing or training. The shoes can help correct foot
movement and reduce the risk of injuries.

Choose a shoe specific to the sports or activity- it is

recommended that a cross-training shoe should be worn.

Evaluate foot movement pattern- Individuals should be

aware of how their feet move during physical activity.
Let’s Analyze
!
Will Smith starred in the film, “Concussion” in 2015. It is a
biographical sports drama about a forensic pathologist who
researched about the risks of professional athletes playing American
Football.

Let’s
Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity or MVPA are done to reduce

the risk of chronic disease. MVPA is a category of activity intensity
measured with Metabolic Equivalents (METs) which is a ratio of the
effective metabolic rate compared to a resting metabolic rate of a
person. A person who is quietly sitting is 1 MET. Moderate intensity
is 3-6 METs while Vigorous0intensity is above 6 METs.

24
Learn about
it !
DEHYDRATION -happens when a person loses
more fluid than is taken in.

OVEREXERTION - occurred when a person had

way too much physical and skeletomuscular
activity.
HYPOTHERMIA - occurs when the body loses
heat faster than it can produce heat.

HYPERTHERMIA -happens when the body’s

temperature climbs too high above 40 C.
Let’s Analyze
! are different brands, flavors, and kinds.
There are a lot of products that can be drunk when playing sports.
