Reading in Philippine History

Antonio Pigafetta wrote a chronicle about Magellan's voyage around the world in the early 16th century. The chronicle provides a first-hand account of the expedition from Pigafetta's perspective as one of the survivors. The purpose of the document was to inform future generations about the history and geographical discoveries of the period. However, it is acknowledged that as a single author's perspective, the chronicle is subject to biases in how events were portrayed.

Assignment

Submit the reaction paper required in this learning packet. (The output of the task in the activity part in
the activity part)

Antonio Pigafetta was a member of Magellan's expedition to the spice island.

Fortunately, he is one of the survivors and one of those who returned to Spain. He is the reason
we know about Magellan's voyage. The document of Antonio, which is considered a chronicle,
astounded people because he not only knew the story but was also present and a part of it.
Pigafetta wrote a chronicle about Magellan's voyage. And a chronicle is a “historical account of
events presented in chronological order, similar to a time line.” According to some, the Pigafetta
chronicle was “one of the most cited documents by historians studying the precolonial
Philippines.”

It is for the people living in the present. As we all know, this document talks a lot about history,
especially the time of Spanish colonization. It is for the people to know the past that can affect
our future, and for the people to know what happened in the past that may be the reason for the
happenings in the present. Also, it is for the historian, to have knowledge about their profession.

Knowing that Pigafetta wrote all his observations in a journal, we can say that it is a crucial part
of the past. The purpose of writing this document is for the people to be aware of our history and
what made the world works this way now a days. It somehow paints an accurate image from the
past, the native way of life prior to Spanish colonization that made us aware of what is life back
then. It is also related to the geographical discoveries of the Sixteenth Century, which it made it
more important.

As he left a detailed description of his journey in the Report of the first trip around the world as
his journal, navy exploration and discovery. The first world circumnavigation was maybe the
most important message that he was trying to convey as it was became the greatest achievement
in the history of navy and exploration.
Knowing the fact that he wrote the document based on his own perspective can already be seen
as bias. He may be trying to convey the happenings in the past but we can’t deny the fact that
those were only from his point of view, and since it was from the past we can’t see the other
people’s point of view or even their opinion about it.
