A Case Study: Managing up: Grace

1. In order to effectively manage up, what thing should Grace understand about herself?

Ans:

a) Grace’s needs are to be recognized and to be chosen for more advanced roles in the
b) company, high profile projects which she does not yet qualify to be apart seeing that she

c) junior employee. When the idea fails to gains support from her boss, she should refocus
on being

When idea fails to get support from Boss, she should refocus on being a subordinate and
continue to stay on regular project. After convincing many times to Landon, she should
understand that her current position is not earned the rights to make changes or big project.

b) She has passion for change, innovation. Also, she was ambitious but at the same time she
should have kept control on her emotions.

c) After rejection from Landon, she made decision to take matter to higher authority. But
doing this she made him more annoyed & also exhausted her time over matter.

d) Grace could have avoided the political behaviour of provoking people about the bad
software by simply communicating the flaws and its solution of it to the management and
wait for their reply

e) Grace need to follow direction & instruction from her manager. Without comply direction
from Manager Grace will be seen as employee who cause conflict and also does not seems
like a good team worker.

2. In order to effectively manage up, what thing should Grace understand about Landon?
Ans:

a) Landon’s preferred method of communication which is face to face conversation


because it allows for real time feedback. As seen in this case study, Landon always stop
by her desk everyday with encouraging words. Another example, When Grace annoyed a
long-term customer, Landon personally looked and solved the problem. After that he
called Grace into his office and share feedback on how to handle and improve
relationship with customer.
b) Grace should understand about Landon and his strength, more towards Guidance or
mentorship.
c) Grace should understand that Landon was been in her position prior and he is well
versed about the roles and responsibility of each position. Whereas Landon is constantly
busy with some other major assignments/Projects work and has no time to invest in
another big projects.
d) Landon is great mentor by helping Grace to advance her career and share his ideas on
how to succeed in the industry.
e) Grace overlook his expertise and experience when Landon does not buy into her plans
for upgrading the software.

3. Should Grace send that email to Bill? What would be the likely impact on Landon? On
Grace?

Ans:

a) Grace is trying to add values to company, she has no expertise in IT to determine if her
plan to upgrade to new software will be success and helpful to company or not. She also
does not know the financial cost of upgrade. I think Grace should have the necessary
knowledge to push her idea and therefore she should not send the email to Bill.
b) Bill Michaels is encouraging, a process driven person who believes in hierarchy.
c) Seeing that, Grace is junior employee. Her action directly reflects Landon’s guidance. Bill
expect that ideas to be filters through managers.
d) Bill’s assessment of Landon will be called to questioned to determine of Landon should
be a manager seeing that he is unable to manager junior employee and Landon is an
ineffective leader and should not hold this position.
e) If Grace send that mail to Bill, which can result as negative impact on her future
opportunity while creating conflict within the office.

4. Imagine Grace has come to you for help. Develop a plan for her to manage her
relationship with Landon in order to meet her career goals?

Ans:
a) Grace is supposed to creating value for her manager Landon, but her actions are doing
opposite. At the 8SK, the culture having high expectation from its employees.
b) Grace should understand about her needs, strength, weakness, and Individual Potential.
c) I suggest Grace should always follows the hierarchy in an organisation in every situation.
d) And she should always take a guidance from Landon because he has the knowledge and
experience of many years compare to her. And Landon always being a helpful Manager
his guidance will constantly add a value to her job.
e) Grace should have all the required and necessary knowledge before presenting ideas to
Manager.
