Changing the base of logarithms

1. Find to 3 decimal places:

a) log5 23

b) log8 29

c) log7 42

d) log3 11

e) log4 24

f ) log6 30

2. Solve, giving your answer to 3 significant figures:

a) log4 x + 3 logx 4 = 4

b) log5 x − 6 logx 5 = 1

c) log3 x + 4 logx 3 = 4

d) log7 x + 14 logx 7 = 9

e) log11 x + logx 11 = 2

f ) log2 x + 8 logx 2 = 6

Solutions
1. Find to 3 decimal places:
log10 23
a) log5 23 = log10 5 = 1.95

log10 29
b) log8 29 = log10 8 = 1.62

log10 42
c) log7 42 = log10 7 = 1.92

log10 11
d) log3 11 = log10 3 = 2.18

log10 24
e) log4 24 = log10 4 = 2.29

log10 30
f ) log6 30 = log10 6 = 1.90

2. Solve, giving your answer to 3 significant figures:

3
a) log4 x + 3 logx 4 = 4 =⇒ log4 x + log4 x =4
Let log4 x = y
3
y+ =4
y
2
y + 3 = 4y
y 2 − 4y + 3 = 0
(y − 3)(y − 1) = 0
So y = 3 or y = 1
log4 x = 3 or log4 x = 1
x = 43 or x = 41
x = 64 or x = 4

2
6
b) log5 x − 6 logx 5 = 1 =⇒ log5 x − log5 x =1
Let log5 x = y
6
y− =1
y
2
y −6=y
y2 − y − 6 = 0
(y − 3)(y + 2) = 0
So y = 3 or y = −2
log5 x = 3 or log5 x = −2
x = 53 or x = 5−2
1
x = 125 or x = 25

4
c) log3 x + 4 logx 3 = 4 =⇒ log3 x + log3 x =4
Let log3 x = y
4
y+ =4
y
2
y + 4 = 4y
y 2 − 4y + 4 = 0
(y − 2)2 = 0
So y = 2 log3 x = 2
x = 32
x=9

3
14
d) log7 x + 14 logx 7 = 9 =⇒ log7 x + log7 x =9
Let log5 x = y
14
y+ =9
y
y 2 + 14 = 9y
y 2 − 9y + 14 = 0
(y − 7)(y − 2) = 0
So y = 7 or y = 2
log7 x = 7 or log7 x = 2
x = 77 or x = 72
x = 823543 or x = 49

1
e) log11 x + logx 11 = 2 =⇒ log11 x + log11 x =2
Let log11 x = y
1
y+ =2
y
2
y + 14 = 2y
y 2 − 2y + 1 = 0
(y − 1)2 = 0
So y = 1
log11 x = 1
x = 111
x = 11

4
8
f ) log2 x + 8 logx 2 = 6 =⇒ log2 x + log2 x =6
Let log2 x = y
8
y+ =6
y
2
y + 8 = 6y
y 2 − 6y + 8 = 0
(y − 4)(y − 2) = 0
So y = 4 or y = 2
log2 x = 4 or log2 x = 2
x = 42 or x = 22
x = 16 or x = 4
