In order to create and mold future nurses to be at their best shape
and selves, they must be able t enhance skills that will be used to not only better their practice but become good stewards for care and change. Because of the current situation we are all facing, student nurses like myself had to experience a great shift, a shift that has changed and compromised not only the way we learn, but also how we enhance our skills-- online rotation. Nurse educators work day and night in order to make sure that despite the current situation, students nurses will not only ride with the times, but thrive despite adversities. For this rotation my group-mates and I encountered various activities that would help us mold into the best versions of ourselves and our profession. Our clinical instructor allowed us to engage in evidence-based readings, drug study, nursing care plans, reporting, and allowed us to interview a mother whom experienced post-partum care thrice. All of the activities except the interview happened in the NEO LMS, while the interview took place in a zoom meeting. All of my group-mates, instructor and the client F was present during the said interview, while the activities held in the NEO LMS was done by all, but individually. During the interview, every single student nurse present was given the opportunity to ask Client F a question. It was indeed an activity that allowed us to see post-partum from the experience and perspective of a mother. Growing up in a small family, having kids around was foreign to me for my twin sister and I do not have any other siblings and our cousins are just about the same age as my twin and I. During every activity, I would gather this great sense of realization--- labor and being a mother is not easy. You are burdened with not only changes but great deal of responsibilities. Before, I already knew that being a mother and going into labor is immensely difficult. However, I thought that after labor, everything would be fine for both the mother and infant--- I was stand corrected. I am still left at awe knowing how much a mother has sacrificed her whole entire self for her child. I could not help but wonder how teenage mothers who are shunned by their families, community and even partners survive? Especially with the fact that a mother under the post-partum period is utterly emotional and vulnerable to depression. I could not help but salute all mothers--- they are indeed under-appreciated heroes of all generations. Now, given the activities especially the interviews; fortunately I had no bad experience. All the assessments are given at a good timeline and the interview went smoothly like butter. The activity was a great experience for us all. We had a conversation with an actual human being who has undergone post-partum. Listening to her melts my heart, and a realization came to me all of a sudden--- my mother too has experienced these challenges and looking at her now, I could not help but be proud of her. Moreover, due to the current situation, my group-mates and I have not have the opportunity to really help and assist mothers under the post-partum period. We are given theories and reading materials in order to give us the basic concepts and ideology of how post-partum care works and what are the possible risks. From the activities and interview, the only thing I could say that is a negative feedback is that not everyone has sufficient internet that would sustain them. Client F herself experienced a few internet glitches. But other than that, the activity was nothing but insightful. As for our activities, the reading materials and videos presented really has illustrated to us how important post-partum care really is. In addition, in order to suffice my own curiosity, I would also research and watch documentaries on post-partum depression for the topic really interests me. I believe that mental health of a mother is equally as important as her physical recovery. The statement that has really stuck by me is that "post-partum care is caring for the mother for her to be able to care for her baby to become healthy and safe." The Activities and interview was indeed a experience worth cherishing for a nursing student. In addition, because of the interview activity, I have learned that everyone has their own curiosities to fill and that dividing works and allowing everyone the chance to speak is giving them opportunities to learn. If I was to do thing in a different way, I would have communicated with my fellow group-mates about the questions we will ask our Client so that there is a big assurance that repetitive questions will be avoided. Moreover, I would also like to involve myself more and participate more for I want to improve my communication skills and I also want to be more confident in my own craft.
