11 Physics Week 2

1. The document discusses various wave parameters including period, frequency, amplitude, speed, and wavelength. 2. It provides equations to calculate frequency from period and period from wavelength and speed. For example, it explains that frequency is equal to 1/period and period is equal to wavelength divided by speed. 3. Key wave properties like displacement, amplitude, wavelength, and wave speed are defined. Displacement refers to the distance from the equilibrium position, amplitude is the maximum displacement, wavelength is the shortest distance between peaks or troughs, and wave speed describes how fast the wave propagates.

WEEK 2

TOPIC: WAVE PARAMETERS TEACHER: MISS PADMINIE JAIMANGAL

Waves originate from vibrations, which are oscillating motions over a fixed position. A vibration
can cause a disturbance to travel through a medium, transporting energy without transporting
matter.

Major wave parameters: the ways in which we measure waves. A wave is characterized by its
period, frequency, amplitude, speed, and wavelength.

Frequency and time period

The frequency of a wave can be calculated using this equation:

Frequency = 1

time period

f = 1/T

where:

f is the number of waves produced by a source per second, it is measured in hertz (Hz).

T is the time it takes for one complete oscillation, it is measured in seconds.

All waves, including sound waves and electromagnetic waves, follow this equation. For
example, a wave with a time period of 2 seconds has a frequency of 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 Hz.

1. A sound wave has a time period of 0.0001 seconds. What is its frequency?
2. A radio wave has a time period of 0.0000003333333 seconds. What is its frequency?
What is a period in physics?
In physics, the period of a wave is the amount of time it takes for a wave to complete one wave
cycle or wavelength, which is the distance from peak to peak or trough to trough.
The wave period is the measure of time it takes for the wave cycle to complete. We usually
measure the wave period in seconds and represent it with the letter T.
The period of a wave is measured in seconds, and it is found by measuring the amount of time it
takes for a wave to complete one cycle, or wavelength. If the frequency of a wave is known, then
the period can be calculated by taking the inverse of the frequency.

Example:
A wave has a frequency of 2000 Hz, determine its period.

Therefore, the wave period is 0.0005 seconds.

Formula to calculate wave period from wave length ( λ) and speed.

We get wave period by dividing the wavelength by the wave speed.

Example:
Determine the wave period of a water wave whose length is 3m and its speed is 6 m/s.

Therefore, the wave period is 0.5 seconds.

Displacement (For Waves)

Displacement (for waves) – distance in a particular direction of a particle from its mean position.
The displacement of a particle on a wave is its distance in a specified direction from its position.

A transverse wave is represented by plotting displacement on the y-axis and distance (x) along
the wave in the direction of energy travel, on the x-axis. Even though, for a longitudinal wave,
the displacement of the particles is along the direction of the energy travel, the displacement is
plotted on the y-axis and distance along the x-axis. The graph for representing both transverse
and longitudinal waves is the same in shape as represented by the figure below. Wave properties
of waves can be determined by these graphs.

Amplitude

The amplitude of the wave motion is defined as the maximum displacement of a particle in the
wave.

The amplitude or peak amplitude of a wave is a measure of how big its oscillation is. The

distance from the top of one peak to the bottom of another is called peak-to-peak amplitude.
Another way to describe peak-to-peak amplitude is to say that it is the distance between the
maximum positive value and the maximum negative value of a wave is the maximum
displacement of a wave from an equilibrium position.
The Amplitude is the height from the center line to the peak (or to the trough). Or we can
measure the height from highest to lowest points and divide that by 2.

Wavelength

The wavelength is the shortest distance between two peaks, or the shortest distance between two
troughs. It can also be defined as the distance moved by the wave front during one oscillation of
the source of the waves. The symbol for wavelength is λ (Greek letter lambda).

Wave speed
Wave speed, also known as wave velocity, is a term used in physics to
describe the speed at which a wave is propagating. Most often this
involves light in some kind of medium, whether it be air or a vacuum.
