Richel E. Maglunsod MST-Physics Chapter Exam Reflection

The document discusses several optical phenomena including reflection, refraction, dispersion, polarization, and the formation of rainbows. Reflection occurs when light bounces off a smooth surface at the same angle it hits. Refraction is the bending of light when passing from one medium to another. Dispersion is observed when oil on a road or water droplets separate white light into colors. Polarized lenses and LCD screens use polarization filters.

Reflection

Reflection is when light bounces off an object. If the surface is smooth and shiny, like glass,
polished metal, water the light will reflect at the same angle as it hit the surface. In the 1st
picture which is the water is in smooth surface, the real image of the trees and mountain is
reflected at the same angle and position upside down and in the 2nd picture, as we can see the
reflection of light from the flashlight is scattered because the surface is rough which is called
diffuse reflection.
Refraction

Refraction is the change in the direction of a wave passing from one medium to another such as
the bending of this image of a girl and the change in position of the fish.
Dispersion

Dispersion due to Oil on Road. When there is Oil spilled on Road, we can sometimes see the
different colors of white light.

Formation of Rainbow. We observed that after rain, when sunlight passes through the water
droplets, we get a Rainbow.
Polarization
Polarized Lenses. Polarized lenses help reduce glare and provide additional clarity while
keeping your eyes protected.

Polarized LCD Display. LCD screens found on smartphones, televisions and many monitors are
also constructed with polarized filters and viewing these through polarized sunglagesses
creates distortion. This means that the emitted off of the LCD screen is polarized and emitted
out horizontally.
