Read the Grammar reference. Choose the correct words to complete the
sentences. Then listen and check. 

Grammar reference

8.1 Count and uncount nouns

There are countable nouns. These can be singular or plural.

a book  → two books           an egg  → six eggs

There are uncountable nouns.

bread                                rice

! Some nouns are both.

We'd like three ice creams, please.     Do you like ice cream?

8.2 some and any

We use some in positive sentences with uncount nouns and plural nouns.

There is some bread on the table.

There are some oranges on the table.

We use some in questions when we ask for things and offer things.

Can I have some coffee, please?

Would you like some grapes?

We use any in questions and negative sentences with uncount nouns and plural nouns.

Is there any water?                       I don't know if there is any water.

Does she have any children?        I don't know if she has any children.

We haven't got any rice.

There aren't any people.

8.4 How much …?, How many …? a lot of

We use How much …? with uncount nouns in questions and negatives.


How much rice is there? There isn’t much rice.

We use How many …? with plural count nouns in questions and negatives.

How many apples are there? There aren't many apples.

In the positive, we use a lot of

We need a lot of milk.

1. Milk is / are good for you.


2.   Apples is / aredelicious.
3.   'I bought two ice cream / ice creams . This one's for you.' 'Thanks.'
4.   We need any / some tomatoes and any / some cheese for this recipe.
5.   Are there any / some biscuits in the cupboard?
6.   I don't want any / some toast. I'm not hungry.
7.   Can we have any / some water, please?
8.   Would you like any / some wine with your meal? some any.MP3
9.   There aren't many sandwiches / bread .
10.   How much sausages / ham did you buy?
11.   ' How much / How many eggs are there?' 'There are a lot – we don't
need any more.'
12.   There are a lot / a lot of different ingredients in this recipe.
