CHURCH
A L I V E : Sacred Reading
If everyone thinks that nothing can be done, then nothing will be done. In ways mysterious beyond our comprehension,
God multiplies our personal efforts, interweaves them with the work of others, and uses them to transform the
world. This is fruitful living.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 97

Feeding one person at a time, visiting one prisoner at a time, and building one house at a time are vitally important.
Hands-on, face-to-face ministry changes lives. The grace of God flows from person to person through life-changing
mission. However, people who practice Risk-Taking Mission and Service also discern God’s call to involve themselves
in social change, political activity, and community causes. Some people offer themselves to change systems, confront
injustice, and relieve suffering on a large scale. The tools for change become policies, funding initiatives and petitions
rather than hammers, cooking pans, and wheelchair ramps. The imperative of God’s love propels people into the
struggle for change at all levels – personal, family, congregational, community, national, and global.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 106

Social change is risky. Some social witness the world understands – seeking cures to cancer, protecting children
from abuse, supporting victims of violence. Other forms of social witness the world cannot fathom because such
initiatives seem foolish, unrealistic, or hopeless – working with violent offenders, protesting torture, establishing
programs for drug addicts, organizing for peace, protecting the rights of immigrants. Public opinion stoked by moral
conviction can leverage powerful change.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 108

People are hungry for what makes a positive difference. Some find their place in personal, hands-on, face-to-face
contact. Others find themselves called by God to offer themselves as change agents at the public, corporate, or policy
level. Both deserve our prayerful support and discernment. We are personal disciples and social creatures, and God’s
grace leads us to private action and public change. God forms us in the way of Christ for the transformation of the
world.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 109

People who practice Risk-Taking Mission and Service understand obedience to Christ. Some things they do, not
because they enjoy it, but because Jesus Christ would do it, invites them to do it, or commands them to do it. They
go where Jesus goes.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 109

CHURCH
A L I V E : Spiritual Maturity and Application
Dedicate time each day this week to prayerfully ponder the questions below. Consider writing your thoughts in a
journal. Ask friends, family, or co-workers some of these questions. Throughout the week, pray that God would
reveal your unique call to serve others.
• Who taught you to value serving others? How did you learn to serve?
• What’s your earliest memory of helping others as an expression of your faith?
• Where have you seen God at work in the midst of loss and suffering?
• How have you been a part of God’s work?
• When have you moved out of your “comfort zone” in order to help another person?
• What has been “risk-taking” about your service to Christ?

During the month of August, all Children & Youth kids, along
with a parent or guardian, will be able to take home and
share books from our children’s book shelves. Just stop
by Room 110 in the Activities Building after church each
Sunday and browse our selection of books.
For each one you get for yourself, take one for a brother,

Don’t forget….they’re yours to keep, but read one and

Are you an “innie” or an “outie”?

The last Landscape and Facilities Work Day in June was a huge
success! With 31 people in attendance, the “innies” were able to do
many indoor projects, such as vacuuming our large Sanctuary, cleaning
stained glass, clearing cobwebs, cleaning windows, aligning the pews….
whew….I could go on and on!
Our “outies” braved the heat and tackled some of our outdoor
tasks, such as gutter cleaning, flower bed maintenance, and cleaning
the weeds from around the Activities Building, to name a few.
Whether you prefer the indoor chores or love being outside,
your church needs you!
Although it is technically a “work day”, it is also a lot of fun. We are
able to fellowship with one another, share a laugh or two (or many
