Throughout August
we will reflect on
how to step out

beliefs to life through
our daily spiritual

renew our call to be

We will study five
practices, grounded
in our core beliefs
that will guide us
in our call to be

Radical Hospitality,
Passionate Worship,
Intentional Spiritual
Transformation,
Compassionate
Mission and Service,
and Extravagant
Generosity. These
practices open our
heart—to God,

help form us so
that we may bring

sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, ‘There are six days on which work ought
to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.’But
the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the
sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it
water?
And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for
eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?’When
he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was
rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

CHURCH
A L I V E : Sacred Reading
If everyone thinks that nothing can be done, then nothing will be done. In ways mysterious beyond our comprehension,
God multiplies our personal efforts, interweaves them with the work of others, and uses them to transform the
world. This is fruitful living.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 97
Feeding one person at a time, visiting one prisoner at a time, and building one house at a time are vitally important.
Hands-on, face-to-face ministry changes lives. The grace of God flows from person to person through life-changing
mission. However, people who practice Risk-Taking Mission and Service also discern God’s call to involve themselves
in social change, political activity, and community causes. Some people offer themselves to change systems, confront
injustice, and relieve suffering on a large scale. The tools for change become policies, funding initiatives and petitions
rather than hammers, cooking pans, and wheelchair ramps. The imperative of God’s love propels people into the
struggle for change at all levels – personal, family, congregational, community, national, and global.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 106
Social change is risky. Some social witness the world understands – seeking cures to cancer, protecting children
from abuse, supporting victims of violence. Other forms of social witness the world cannot fathom because such
initiatives seem foolish, unrealistic, or hopeless – working with violent offenders, protesting torture, establishing
programs for drug addicts, organizing for peace, protecting the rights of immigrants. Public opinion stoked by moral
conviction can leverage powerful change.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 108
People are hungry for what makes a positive difference. Some find their place in personal, hands-on, face-to-face
contact. Others find themselves called by God to offer themselves as change agents at the public, corporate, or policy
level. Both deserve our prayerful support and discernment. We are personal disciples and social creatures, and God’s
grace leads us to private action and public change. God forms us in the way of Christ for the transformation of the
world.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 109
People who practice Risk-Taking Mission and Service understand obedience to Christ. Some things they do, not
because they enjoy it, but because Jesus Christ would do it, invites them to do it, or commands them to do it. They
go where Jesus goes.
~ Robert Schnaese, Five Practices of Fruitful Living, p. 109
CHURCH
A L I V E : Spiritual Maturity and Application
Dedicate time each day this week to prayerfully ponder the questions below. Consider writing your thoughts in a
journal. Ask friends, family, or co-workers some of these questions. Throughout the week, pray that God would
reveal your unique call to serve others.
• Who taught you to value serving others? How did you learn to serve?
• What’s your earliest memory of helping others as an expression of your faith?
• Where have you seen God at work in the midst of loss and suffering?
• How have you been a part of God’s work?
• When have you moved out of your “comfort zone” in order to help another person?
• What has been “risk-taking” about your service to Christ?
