ASYNCRONOUS ACTIVITY IN ENGLISH 101: Varieties and Registers of Language

Read the letter to the editor in a day’s paper, listen to a radio broadcast and watch the people in
conversation at a fast-food chain.

Answer the following questions:

What registers are they using?

➢ When it comes to writing a letter to the editor, people mostly use formal language register. In a radio
broadcast, the broadcaster uses a consultative language register. Lastly, people in conversation at a fast-
food chain use casual and sometimes, intimate language register.

What features identify them as those registers?

➢ While reading the letter to the editor, the first thing that I noticed is that the letter was written in a
formal (block format or a modified block) format. The letter was properly written, starting from the
heading to the complementary close and signature line. Hence, they are using a formal language
register.
➢While listening to the radio broadcast, I noticed that the broadcasters were using a respectful tone of
voice, especially when they were interviewing someone who has the information about the news that
they were reporting. Thus, they are using a consultative language register.
➢Lastly, while watching the people in conversation at a fast- food chain, I noticed that almost all of
them are with their friends, close acquaintances and co-workers, and family. They also used slang,
contractions, and vernacular grammar, when talking with one another. Hence, they are using a casual
and sometimes intimate language registers. However, formal language register may also occur when a
person is dining in with someone they do not know that much, though it only happens occasionally.

Why do you think the speakers chose those registers?

➢People who write letters to a newspaper editor use formal register because they are in a formal
context. They are not just writing a letter to a friend of a family—they are writing a letter to someone
who works at a publishing company. That is why, they must use a formal language register. Meanwhile,
radio broadcasters are more of like consulting someone who has the information or knowledge about
the news that they are covering, that is why, they use consultative language register. Finally, people in
conversation at a fast-food chain use casual and intimate register because they are not in a formal
context. Almost all of them are with their families, friends, co-workers, etc., so they do not have to talk
formally with each other.

Cite more situations where local and global varieties of spoken language used. What registers are
appropriate to such situations?
➢ Local varieties of spoken language are used by people from the same speech community. In
communicating locally, most of us use our national language which is Filipino. We use it in our everyday
communication, such us sending letters or messages, making transactions, and everything from
academic essay to a certain event or celebration. Our dialects are also considered as a local language
since we use it in communicating with people within a particular region. On the other hand, global
varieties of spoken language are language that are widely spoken, internationally. English is the most
widely spoken language in the world. When tourists visit our country, they would always try their best to
speak in English because it is the only way they communicate with us, since they do not know how to
speak Filipino. Also, when we try to communicate with other people from all around the world through
social media, we use the English language. English became the alternative language to use when
communicating internationally because it is the universal language.
