Sensornet Oct 2017-DAS-NAS

This document discusses distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) fibre optic monitoring systems. It provides information on DAS and DTS applications including pipeline leak detection and condition monitoring. It also describes how the systems integrate data from the optical fibre sensors with data visualization and alarm software. The key applications of DAS are mentioned as pipeline leak detection, third party intrusion detection, and vibration sensing along pipelines or power cables.

Fibre Sensing Solution
DTS applications:

- Pipeline Leak Detection

- Condition Monitoring
- Temperature Monitoring

DAS applications:

- Pipeline Leak Detection

- Third Party Intrusion
- Vibration Sensing

Fibre Optic Sensing Cable is sensor and it can be used for both DTS and DAS.

Data Viewer:

- Displays output data from DTS and DAS

- Allows alarms management and acknowledgment
- Allows integration with SCADA/DCS/CCTV
- Provides data representation on GIS mapping
Fibre sensing solutions
Combine DTS and DAS, digital acoustic sensing

 Main application is third party intrusion for pipeline security

 Pig tracking
 Complements DTS for leak detection
 Continuous monitoring 40km or 80km with two channel
model
 Single mode fibre
 Power cable fault locations
 Single integrated fibre sensing cabinet

SENSORNET product Innovation
DTS & DAS
 Complementary technology

 Sensornet combine as required into single cabinet

 One set of alarms and SCADA outputs

 Simplify project management and reduce risk

 DTS is best for temperature measurements

 Changes in local temperature relate to events of interest

 DAS is best for intrusion on the pipe or cable and pig tracking
 Direct interference of the pipe or its immediate vicinity

 Can ‘hear’ some leaks

 Need to be able to distinguish relevant sounds from background noise

DTS & DAS
 DTS is looking at two discrete wavelengths, simple optics
 Measuring optical signals over time of flight

 One day installation

 Clear alarms based on change in temperature of sensing cable

 DAS is looking at the scatter light at the same wavelength of the

transmitted signal; coherent light detection
 Measuring optical signals over time of flight and looking at audible frequencies;
higher cost receiver and signal analysis

 Need to interpret this data into alarm events

 Requires 5-10 days installation as learning about environment of each project

 Care with false alarms

Distributed Acoustic Sensing UnitThe DAS system turns the entire length
of a standard Singlemode Fibre Optic
Cable into a highly sensitive vibration
sensor.

The system operates detecting

vibration events occurring in the vicinity
of the Fibre Optic Cable.

Fibre Optic Cable = Singlemode ITU G652

Maximum Distance per active channel = 40km
Available channels = up to 2
Spatial Resolution down to 1 metre
Spatial Accuracy in Event Detection < 20m

Dimensions = 4U / 19’’
System Operating Software
The DAS system control is achieved at three
levels:

- Using the DAS Web Interface: real-time

monitoring and control software installed
directly on the DAS unit;

- Using Viewer Panoptes: a system server

and alarm handling GUI providing GIS
mapping view and information;

- Through integration with clients systems

(SCADA/DCS/CCTV).
DAS Web Interface
This Web Interface is accessible through a thin client and it provides real-time display of the system
outputs using a Waterfall display.
This software enables discrimination between different threats and the generation of specific alarms for
different events: mechanical excavation, manual digging, personnel movement, vehicle movement.
Operator Control Interface: Panoptes
Panoptes is the system server and alarm handling GUI. This software is able to receive inputs from several DAS units
deployed along the asset, integrating all the data into a single GIS map view.
Using this display Clients are able to view and manage threat alarms generated by the DAS along the full length of the
border, pipeline or perimeter.
Operator Control Interface: Panoptes cont’d
In addition to alarm reporting, Panoptes provides the portal for:

- Acknowledging alarms, and providing supporting information if

available
- Monitoring system health, using a highly intuitive icon-based display
- Calibrating system performance on the map image
- Setting time-based alarm suppression
- Maintaining system and alarm logs, and generating reports as
required

Panoptes includes the Accumulator functionality, which offers greater control of alarm presentation
through use of confidence-based alarm escalation approach.
Confidence levels are determined by pre-set time and location based parameters.
Typical Leak detection set up
 Typical schematic
 Single integrated fibre sensing
system; DTS, DAS, Server, Relays,
multiplexor for expansion
 42U 19” Rack
 Fibre via patch panel to the pipeline
 SCADA and Relays for alarms
 Cabinet includes soft shutdown
 DTS multi-mode DAS single mode
fibres
 Can be up to 40km for DTS and DAS
Example complex continuous DTS and DAS
 Dual ended 65km pipe. Two cabinets in control rooms
 Alarms over SCADA, MODBUS/TCP/IP etc.
 Each fibre terminated at junction box in middle of pipe
