Eco-Critical Thoughts in John Keats Poetry: Ode On A Grecian Urn

This document discusses how John Keats' poetry can be analyzed through an eco-critical lens. It examines two of Keats' poems, "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "To Autumn," noting how they reference nature and explore themes of mortality, transience of life, and the relationship between humans and their environment. The document concludes that Keats' poetry depicts humans as an interconnected part of the larger ecosystem, rather than the center of it.

Eco-Critical thoughts in John Keats Poetry

Eco criticism investigates the relationship between nature and literature. It is

based on the human response to the natural environment. This theory tries to
find out the modern day ecological problems through the inspiration drew
from romantic literature. In the romantic age most of the work is done on/by
reference to nature. As Eco criticism is the nature centered effort to the
literary studies, so it is easier to relate it with most of the literary work of
romantic age.
John Keats is a major figure in Romantic Movement. He mostly talks about
mortality and escapism from the reality through natural beauties. He relates
his literary practices in the complexity of human life and the subjects that
define human condition. Keats in his poetry always relates his urgency to be
immortal to enjoy the beauty of the world. However, he dies in a very young
age. As he says in the poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn” that art hold
the time forever his poetry will always holds his idea of life and expression of
beauty. Keats ideas and thoughts can easily be related with the idea of eco-
criticism. His literature is mostly related with the nature and the human
condition. Mortality, death, sex and transience of life all these things are the
subjects of his poetry. The idea he mostly talks about is the
mortality/immortality. In the selected poem he talks about life and death as
well as the immortality of art. He often associated with the term love in his
poetry he mostly talks about the nature and its relation with human being. In
the poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn” the poet talks about innocence, transience
of life, sex, art and knowledge. By the word innocence he tries to establish that
the urn is representing a world which does not suffer by the hardship of real
life. He wants alienate him and wants to forget the hardship of real life by his
poetic imagination. He removes the idea of transience by saying “Thou foster-
child of Silence and slow Time”. In the world of urn times moves slowly and
the people of urn can spend more time in life. The urn is presented as a
historian and a story teller. The urn slows the time and gives the human to
enjoy the nature more. It holds all the green in nature to give the lovers
moments to express their love.

In the poem “To Autumn” the poet personalized and described it as the
most important season of human life. In the time of autumn the fruit rips
and flower blooms. Autumn is the transition of summer to winter. The main
feature of autumn paves the way for further growth. In the western culture
autumn is personalized as a pretty leady adorn with fruits. In many cultures
have harvest festival in autumn. The poem brings the importance of the
seasons in human life as well as human existence. To describing the eco
critical aspects, the poem focuses on the relationship between nature and
the literature. The poem talks about the human condition and its
surrounding effects. The season autumn is the part of our ecosphere. Eco
criticism is about the ecosystem and its relation with human.
In the first stanza of the poem the poet describes how the sun and the
autumn are useful for our ecological balance. He talks about the human and
the greenery that surrounds by the human. He talks about mortality,
transformation of seasons, and the importance of sun in human life.
The poet expresses his desperation to move far from the normal life in the
poem, “ode to a nightingale”. The poet finds the happiness through the song
of nightingale and he wants to lead a life the way a nightingale does because
it does not have any complexity in life like men have.

Conclusion::
Eco-criticism is about, the planet earth and the ecosystem and its
representation on literature. The eco-critics try to find out the viable
relation between a text and nature. The poetry of Keats shows that the
presence of nature and human life are united together and their relationship
is bound by the natural forces driven by nature. So, human existence can be
seen as a part of the whole ecosystem. It should not derived from the idea
that we humans are not the center of everything but part of a large
ecosphere.
