Eco-Critical Thoughts in John Keats Poetry: Ode On A Grecian Urn
In the poem “To Autumn” the poet personalized and described it as the
most important season of human life. In the time of autumn the fruit rips
and flower blooms. Autumn is the transition of summer to winter. The main
feature of autumn paves the way for further growth. In the western culture
autumn is personalized as a pretty leady adorn with fruits. In many cultures
have harvest festival in autumn. The poem brings the importance of the
seasons in human life as well as human existence. To describing the eco
critical aspects, the poem focuses on the relationship between nature and
the literature. The poem talks about the human condition and its
surrounding effects. The season autumn is the part of our ecosphere. Eco
criticism is about the ecosystem and its relation with human.
In the first stanza of the poem the poet describes how the sun and the
autumn are useful for our ecological balance. He talks about the human and
the greenery that surrounds by the human. He talks about mortality,
transformation of seasons, and the importance of sun in human life.
The poet expresses his desperation to move far from the normal life in the
poem, “ode to a nightingale”. The poet finds the happiness through the song
of nightingale and he wants to lead a life the way a nightingale does because
it does not have any complexity in life like men have.
Conclusion::
Eco-criticism is about, the planet earth and the ecosystem and its
representation on literature. The eco-critics try to find out the viable
relation between a text and nature. The poetry of Keats shows that the
presence of nature and human life are united together and their relationship
is bound by the natural forces driven by nature. So, human existence can be
seen as a part of the whole ecosystem. It should not derived from the idea
that we humans are not the center of everything but part of a large
ecosphere.
