Engineering Mechanics Assignment No.1: KINEMATICS OF PARTICLE: Motion Related To Cartesian Coordinates, Rectilinear

This document contains 10 questions related to kinematics of particles involving rectilinear and curvilinear motion. The questions involve calculating velocities, accelerations, distances, times, and components of motion for particles or objects moving in one or two dimensions under conditions of constant or variable acceleration. Specific examples include stones thrown vertically, balls released in elevators, cars moving along curved paths with tangential acceleration, and objects moving along rotating or translating guides, rods, or arms.

ASSIGNMENT NO.1
KINEMATICS OF PARTICLE: Motion related to Cartesian coordinates, Rectilinear
motion of particles, Curvilinear motion of particles

Q. 1 A stone is thrown vertically into the air from the top of tower 100m high. At the
same instant a second stone is thrown upward from the ground. The initial velocity
of first stone is 50m/s and that of second stone is 75m/s. When and where will the
stones be at the same height from the ground.
Q. 2 A ball is released from the bottom of an elevator which is traveling upward with a
velocity of 1.828 m/s. If the ball strikes the bottom of the elevator shaft in 3 s,
determine the height of the elevator from the bottom of the shaft at the instant the
ball is released. Also, find the velocity of the ball when it strikes the bottom of the
shaft.
Q. 3 A particle moves along a straight line with an acceleration of , where ‘x’ represents
displacement. When t=3 seconds, x=64 m and V= 48m/s. Find velocity and
acceleration when t=2 seconds.
Q. 4 A car starts from rest on a curved road of 250 m radius and accelerates at a constant
tangential acceleration of 0.6 m/s2.Determine the distance and time for which that
car will travel before the magnitude of total acceleration attained by it becomes
0.75m/s2.
Q. 5 A car is travelling on a curved section of a track of radius 1000 m at a speed of 100
km/h. The brakes are suddenly applied causing the car to slow down at constant
rate. After 10 s the speed of car is reduced to 60 km/h. Determine the acceleration
of car immediately after the brakes are applied.
Q. 6 The automobile has a speed of 24.38 m/s at point A and an acceleration a having
a magnitude of 3.04 m/s2, acting in the direction shown in the Figure Q. 6.
Determine the radius of curvature of the path at point A and the tangential
component of acceleration.

Q. 7 The car travels along a road which for a short distance is defined by r= (200/θ) m,
where θ is in radians. If it maintains a constant speed of v= 35 m/s, determine the
𝜋
radial and transverse components of its velocity when θ= 3 𝑟𝑎𝑑. Refer Figure Q. 7

Q. 8 The slotted link as shown in Figure Q. 8 is pinned at O, and as a result of the constant
angular velocity θ́ it drives the peg P for a short distance along the spiral guide r =
aθ. Determine the radial and transverse components of the velocity and acceleration
of P at the instant θ = θ1. Given a = 0.4m, b = 0.5m, θ́ = 3 rad/s , θ˝ = 8 rad/s2, θ1
= π/3 rad.

Q. 9 The collar A in Figure Q. 9 slides along the rotating rod OB. The angular position
2
of the rod is given by 𝜃 = 3 𝜋𝑡 2 rad and the distance of the collar from O varies as
R =18t4+4 m, where time t is measured in seconds. Determine the velocity and
acceleration vectors of the collar at t =0.5 s.

Q. 10 The position of the slider P in the rotating slotted arm OA as shown in Figure Q. 10
is controlled by a power screw as shown. At the instant represented 𝜃̇=8 rad/s and
𝜃̈=-20 ras/s2.Also at the same instant r=200 mm and 𝑟̇ =-300 mm/s and 𝑟̈ =0. For this
instant, determine the r and θ components of acceleration of P.
