Steam
During the Industrial revolution in the 1800’s, steam power began to replace water power, and
animal/human power, fueled mostly by coal. With major changes in technology, manufacturing,
transportation and machinery, this time period makes for an interesting game style. The art style I was
thinking about would be similar to that of “Steam-Punk”, with an emphasis on intricate machines,
factories, gears, and steam power.
Concept:
A 2D scroller puzzle game set in England (London maybe?), where the player makes their way
through 4 stages (levels) of puzzles and mazes to rescue the damsel in distress (objective
subject to change).
Level One:
Nobody knows the troubles I’ve seen
The game starts with the damsel kidnapped by an evil doctor/politician (whoever we want it to
be) and the main character becomes imprisoned by the antagonist. An inattentive guard gives
the player an escape chance. The player must navigate through the prison, figure out a puzzle
or two, and fight the guards to escape. Items like weapons, keys, gears, pipes, and other
collectables will be found through-out. The player must collect certain items to unlock doors,
activate switches and levers and ultimately complete the level. This level will also act as a
tutorial level explaining the controls and how to activate various things.
Level Two:
Night out on the Town
The player is now hot on the tail of his archenemy and antagonist of the story and must
navigate through the dizzying maze of the big city in his pursuit. The player must get through
the maze of a level while solving puzzles to open doors, activate platforms, and collect items to
fix steam generators in order to activate trains and other steam powered devices. At the end of
the level the player sees his archrival escape just beyond his grasp into the next level.
Level Three:
Steam Harbor

The player continues his pursuit into a harbor where they must navigate a level of cranes,
platforms, and ships to reach the end. The puzzles are a bit harder and more complex, there are
more items to collect and add to their inventory, and the platforming aspect of the game
becomes more difficult with bigger gaps, higher reaches and faster moving platforms. By the
end of the level the rival again slips away aboard his ship.
Level Four:
All aboard who’s coming aboard.
In the final level the player navigates their archenemies’ ship which is full of traps, puzzles and
enemies to rescue the damsel and defeat their rival. The final boss fight will consist of the
player battling their nemesis who has constructed a steam powered machine they are piloting.
After the boss fight the player frees the damsel, captures the evil-doer, sinks his ship and wins
the game!
