It also touches on descriptive versus normative ethics and the importance of abstraction in ethical thinking. DELGADO, BRENDAN LEWIS 15 NOV 2021

AAMT 1-7 GEC 2108 ETHICS

GROUP 2: BERUNIO, DELGADO, HERNANDEZ

LESSON 3: THINKING OF ETHICS
Experience:
You certainly have already experienced making moral decisions for yourself and making moral
judgements on others, deciding that this action is right, while the opposite could be wrong. Can
you recall a number of those instances? Now, can you recall the reasoning behind your having
said this right and this wrong?
(insert answer)

Assess: Identify the following:

1. Distinguish among the following: moral issue, moral judgement, moral decision, moral
dilemna
A moral issue concerns something or a situation that calls for moral valuation.
Moral judgement is observation of someone judging whether one is right or wrong and what
can be deduced from this person making the decision.
Moral decision is the choice made based on the ethics; when one is placed in a situation and
confronted by the choice of what act to perform.
A moral dilemma is a conflict situation where one is forced to make a single choice among
numbers of choices and all of these choices lead to harm, making a choice to choose the lesser
of the two evils and why that choice.
2. Distinguish between descriptive and normative study of ethics
Descriptive ethics would be concerned with determining what proportion of people believe
that killing is always wrong, while normative ethics is concerned with whether it is correct to
hold such a belief.
3. Explain: What is the importance of abstraction in ethical thinking:
Abstraction is mapping out the thoughts and how one sees the bigger perspective of things. It
allows one to consider these ideas that make up the moral principles.
Challenge:
Does your school have a code of ethics or something that students are expected to follow?
Read it closely and assess whether or not you agree to the provisions stated there and then
consider your reason for agreeing or disagreeing.
There is no code of ethics among students but exists in teaching personnel. They are to follow
this code of ethics as it establishes their role as a teacher and that serves to protect students
and prevent abuse. A teacher has duties and is expected to fulfil for it is their job to do so.
There are only classroom rules established by the institution and the personnel. It is up to them
to enforce the rules and regulations in the institution. It is up to them what rules to impose and
carry out appropriate punishments if these happen to be violated.

Harness:
Look for a newspaper article that tackles an ethical issue. Consider the following questions:
Newspaper article on Abortion
1. What makes this matter of ethics?
The issue on abortion is a matter of ethics as it challenges the perception of the question “when
does life begin?” and has people divided over these whether it is moral or not. In some
countries, abortion is legal and affordable. In some countries, like the Philippines, this is illegal.
In very conservative countries, a miscarriage (also known as spontaneous abortion) can land a
woman in jail.
2. What is your own ethical judgement on this case? (insert answer)
3. What are your reasons for this judgement? (insert answer)
