Q1: Define the problem statement (the why and the what) in the
following situation:

Employee loyalty

Companies benefit through employee loyalty. Crude downsizing in

organizations during the recession
crushed the loyalty of millions.
The economic benefits of loyalty embrace lower recruitment and
training
costs, higher productivity of workers, customer
satisfaction, and the boost to morale of fresh recruits. In
order
that these benefits are not lost, some companies, while downsizing,
try various gimmicks. Flex leave,
for instance, is one. This helps
employees receive 20% of their salary, plus employer-provided
benefits,
while they take a 6-to 12-month sabbatical, with a call
option on their services. Others try alternatives like
more
communication, hand holding, and the like.

This is a typical case on problem statement definition. We are

asked to define the Why - Why is it
important that we solve the
problem, and What - What exactly are the defined boundaries of the
problem?

The given problem statement is clear: Do the benefits of

employee loyalty in terms of economics &
employee morale far
outweigh the perceived benefits of downsizing an
organization?

This is a key problem when exists in many organizations today.

Organizations recruit when they are
growing, and eventualy tend to
over-recruit. They realise their mistake during a fall cycle (when
their
revenues go through a slump), and decide that it is the right
time to "correct" their mistakes. They start
laying off, or start
giving voluntary retirements. This has adverse effects on employee
morales.
It is well known that companies which stand with their employees
during hard times benefit far more in
terms of improved loyalty,
motivation levels and productivity in the long term. These are
qualities you
cannot really quantify, but are invaluable assets. A
good company invests a lot in its employee (which
might not be
apparent initially), and to realise it, it is essential for both
parties to be associated with one
another for a long period of
time.

There are now 2 aspects to it: If the company

has to go ahead with right-sizing/layoffs, then
there are
many ways to do it. The company should ensure that the
communication to the affected employees goes
out in time. It should
ensure that they are given assistance in finding a new opportunity,
and it should also
ensure that they leave with respect.

If the company can afford to stand by its employees, there are

again multiple ways - most of them have
been elucidated in the
question itself.

Hence, the what of the problem is basically How

important is employee loyalty? What happens if we do
not focus on
employee loyalty as an organization? What happens, if as an
organization, we do not care for
our people and only focus on
making money?

The Why of the problem is, if we do not fix the

problem, you might run the company in the short term.
However, it
is going to severely dent the confidence and the morale of the new
joiners in the company,
and the company is going to see very high
churn rates/attrition rates. People are not going to stick around
for long. This is only going to be detrminental towards achieving
the company's long term vision.
