Alalawi, N 2015, ‘ A Research Into the Fact That Media Have Direct Effects on
People in Different Ways’, Studies in Sociology of Science, vol.6, no.6, pp.28-
31, Doi 10.3968/7853.

Bittner, J.R.(1997). Mass communicaton : An introduction, Theory and Practice

of Mass Media in Society.

Curran, Gurevitch, M(2005), Mass media and society, Odder Arnold

The Evolution of Media, Understanding Media and Culture: An Introduction to

Mass, University of Minnesota.

In the 21st century, with media becoming more and more advanced, it is said that

either society or its aspects of life is being affected during media formation

process. Alalawi (2015), a Philosophy Doctor in Mass Media, conducted a

research to figure out the the straightforwardly consequences of media for

general public in contrast ways through its developing process from precede

period to the modern life, in addition, a variety of views from others senior

studies towards this impact were collected. With the same theme regarding to

media, an article named ‘The Evolution of Media’ also explored the

advancement of mass media and its impacts to human life through appropriate

eras. Both papers make a valuable commitment to comprehension of history of

media and its sway on every human aspects.

The main point of Alalawi’s study is that there is no manner restricted regarding

to media on diversity of tranformed elements in human race. In view of

difference viewpoints of various authours in previous related studies, media,

from printed form to advanced technology, brang benefits as well as drawbacks

typically on military, entertainment, education, politics and specially on all social

classes which became a controversial issues buiding up two factions: pro-media

and anti-media. According to the research, Bittner (1997) believed disadvantages

of mass communication dominate its advantages, whereas other two scholars,

Curran and Gurevitch (2005) hold a positive attitude towards this form of

communication. Ultimately , Nouras maintains that the effects of the media were

both positive and negative varying from every fields and played a fundamental

role in life, from which he suggested that vulnerable groups should not be

negatively influenced by mass media.

Correspondingly, ‘ The Evolution of Media’ also gives wide and deep

comprehension of the development of media and their impact on different

historical context. According to the book, the media satisfied a variety of

essential parts on society such as: entertaiment, means of delivering public

opinions,…on costrast, this form of technology was not neatly censored and due

to fast-paced medium, it seemed that information beceme in less profundity in

the past as well as the future. Moreover, the author illustrates the significant

impact of media along its long history from printing press to broadcast TV,
indeed, he also emphasizes some remarkable technological innovations to the

society that supportively highlight the development of media.

According to Alalawi’s research, it is impressive that he provides readers with

rich images regarding to the effects of media, associated with the clean

presentation, readers can easily find out the main ideas of this study about

medium impact and be on alert over the vulnerable groups. Moreover, there is a

variety of previous studies contributing to be a good foundation for this research

which derived from reliable and updated resources. However, overall, the

findings appear to be not exploratory to reader, the research solely sum up

different viewpoints from scholars. The researcher seems to list some effects of

media but not deeply illustrate specific factor like the difference between old

media and the modern one. Hence, it would have been better if there had had a

new research’s methodolody that profoundly focus on each group affected by

media.

Not only do ‘The evolution of media’ successfully convince readers with

insightful picture of the advancement of mass media, but it also brings more

aspects of media than Noura’s research such as: diverse objects and the mention

of approxiate history periods. Yet, the order of time frame was not much rational

that can be repeatedly seen in the demonstrations of previous medium forms.

Similar to Noura, the authour of this book also attached to the development of

media and their effects, no new finding are found to surprise readers, but many
different groups of people has been approached. A smooth follow of timeline

should be added to avoid confusion during the paper. Readers would have felt

freshier if more new findings had been shown in the paper.

In conclusion, the purpose of two paper is give a deep analysis on media impact

and their evolution process, thus, the content is suitable for all ages being

interested in media. Despite the limitations, both paper made a very significant

contribution to expand knowledge in field of media analysis. Noura has

successfully made arguments to assert the notion that media unlimitedly affect

various aspects of life by media-based studies, likewise, in profoundly decribing

each form of media during approxiate historical periods, the book is able to be a

useful foundation to predict the future of media.
