Compilations of Score Study

Processes
By Jayden Thomas and Debora Leckie
Who and Why?
• Who: We contacted directors from Texas
and asked them: What is one of the first
things you do when you get a new score
before rehearsing if with your band?
• Why: We wanted to have a compilation of
different ways to approach score studying
that has been effective. We also wanted a to
look back on different techniques that has
been effective.
Michelle Ross – Grand Prairie ISD
Ashley Kay - Frisco
ISD

• Ashley Kay first looks through the score to see

what the basics are.... key/time/style/form, then she
tries to find potential issues that will come up like
transitions/technical spots/intonation and she listens
for melodic lines and counter-melodies.
Andrew Williams-
White Settlement ISD

• First thing that Andrew Williams does is

listen to the recording of the score, even
before any marking of it happens. He says, "It's
so important to have an aural concept of what
you are about to examine, before that actually
happens."
Reflection
• I really enjoyed hearing back from these directors and how they start
their process. I especially was intrigued with Shannon Jacobs and
Andrew Williams and how they first listen to a recording. I would have
liked for them to explain more in what they are listening to. Whether
they are listening to mimic or finding issues?
