Location Cause Damages Casualty: Landslides

The document discusses three key topics about landslides: 1) It provides two examples of recent landslides in Cagayan de Oro City in the Philippines, noting their locations, causes (heavy rainfall in one case and flooding in the other), and damages/casualties. 2) It explains how human activities like mining, poor road/building construction, inadequate drainage, and deforestation can influence landslide development by exposing soil and altering slopes and drainage patterns. 3) It recommends traditional engineering approaches to mitigate rainfall-induced landslide risk like stabilizing slopes, installing impermeable coatings, and draining landslide-prone areas, as well as engaging engineers for site-

2. How do human activities influence landslide development?
Certain occurrences may cause changes to the land's structure. They employ
mining-like operations that might result in soil formation and expose some areas to the
danger of rock or dirt slides. The fate of landslides may be influenced by human actions.
Many human-caused landslides can be prevented or avoided. They are commonly
harmed by the construction of roads and constructions with inadequate slope grading,
poorly planned drainage alterations, and the disturbance of earlier landslides. Some
behaviors, such as dumping waste around and not caring for the environment, or even
tree cutting that creates floods, might result in landslides.
3. What suggestions can you recommend to reduce the risk of rainfall-
inducedlandslides?
Traditional methods of preventing landslides caused by rain include using wall
panels and ground anchors to stabilize dangerous slopes. Impermeable coatings are
also used to keep water out of landslides by directing surface water away from them,
draining landslide-prone groundwater streams, and limiting watering on the soil's
surface. I would recommend that the barangay authorities engage an engineer to
assess the area and advise them on what should be done in the landslide area. I would
advise you to plant trees. Those who chop down trees are subject to repercussions and
fines.
