This chapter describes Tyapa's narrow escape from Calcutta during World War 2, where he fled to Kurseong. While taking shelter there, Tyapa encounters an Englishman seeking refuge from the rain at his house. They spend three days trapped inside due to heavy rain. Though Tyapa found the Englishman's behavior odd, he was nonetheless helpful. Fifteen years later Tyapa returned to his house, where he had a similar experience of being hosted by the same Englishman, mirroring his first visit.
