Attachment Observation Assignment

Section 1001
Introduction
Part A
2. In the morning the child arrived with his mother, they walked in, the mother
was talking to the child, and they were giggling. The child was making eye contact
with the mother while she was talking. The caregiver said hello to the child and the
mother and asked them how they were doing. The mother then proceeded to put
the child down and began to talk to the care provider. While the mother was
talking to the care provider, the child went to the play area and started playing with
toys. After a while of talking, the mother went up to the child and said her
goodbyes and walked out of the room. While the mother was walking out the
child’s eyes followed her all the way until she wasn’t in view. He then went back
to playing with his toy.
Part B - Base the following answers on your objective observation (Part A/2) of the
child’s interaction with their parent. (This is your interpretation of the objective
observation.)
1. The child displayed eye contact; he was responding to his mother when she
would talk to him. When the mother said goodbye he kept eye contact and watched
her walk out of the room.
2. The parent responded by talking to him more and when it was time to go she
said her goodbyes and told him that she would see him later.
3. When the child first arrived the caregiver asked him how his day was. The
caregiver also walked up to the child after the mother left asking what he was
playing with.
4. The parent seems very happy about the attachment that the child has with his
caregiver. It looked like she trusted the caregiver and knew that her child was in
good hands.
Part C - Base your answers on your objective observation (Part A/2) of the child’s
interaction with the caregiver. (This is your interpretation of the objective
observation.)
1. There was a moment when the caregiver took the child to get changed, when
she went up to the child and called his name, he looked for her and when he saw
her started smiling. The caregiver started talking to the child and he would
maintain eye contact and would sometimes respond with babbles.
2. The caregiver would look the child in the eye when talking to him. Whenever
he started crying she would pick him up and ask him what was wrong.
Part D
1. I felt that this observation provided great information on how caregivers work
every day with children. I saw how the caregivers care for children like the 11-
month-old boy who had an attachment with the caregiver. I also saw how they care
for children who aren’t as attached to them yet.
2. I don’t think I would give any advice to the caregiver or the parent. They both
engaged with the child in different ways, but it showed the child that they are there
for him. The engagement I saw has and will help the child build social skills and
cognitive skills as well.
