El 104 Activity 1

The Philippines is considered a multilingual nation for several reasons: 1) It has over 187 native languages spoken within its borders. 2) Most Filipinos can communicate in more than one language, with many speaking their native language as well as Tagalog, English, and other major regional languages. 3) The country's languages have been influenced by a history of invasion and migration, and geographic isolation has led some communities to develop their own dialects over time.

Given Question:
Why Philippines is Considered a Multilingual Nation?

Multilingualism refers to the act of speaking multiple languages or promoting the use of many
languages by an individual or a group of people. It is also commonly understood to signify the
ability to speak in languages other than one's native tongue effectively and fluently. A person
who can speak three or more languages is called “Multilingual” or “Polyglot.” Furthermore,
there are many multilingual countries in the world to list, but this paper emphasizes on the
Philippines as one of them due to the presence of multiple languages in the country. Due to
education and social media exposure, many Filipinos born outside of the capital of Luzon or
Luzon itself can speak not only their native languages, but also Tagalog or Filipino and
English.

The Philippines is considered as a multilingual country because it has several native

languages within its borders, 187 to be exact (Mirasol, 2017). Filipinos can also communicate
in a different language or dialects, which is why the country is regarded as multilingual. The
rationale for this claim is that the communities that are geographically or relatively isolated
will develop their own speech accents, patterns, and lexicon which results the emergence of
multiple languages or dialects. Also, Filipino native languages have been influenced by a
variety of languages throughout history, and dialect development at the regional level has been
affected as well by invasion and migration of others. Therefore, the majority of Filipinos
residing in different regions and islands who speak a specific language learned to
communicate effectively in three or more languages. Here are the biggest Philippine languages
based on their number of native speakers, as per the Philippines census of 2000, Tagalog has
21.5 million native speakers, Cebuano has 18.5 million, Ilocano has 7.7 million, Hiligaynon has
6.9 million, Bicol has 4.5 million, Waray 3.1 million, Kapampangan 2.3 million, Pangasinan 1.5
million, Kinaray-a 1.3 million, Tausug 1 million, Meranao 1 million, and Maguindanao 1
million. Nevertheless, Filipino is the Philippines' official language, with English as the second,
because Filipino was drawn from all of the country's native or local languages, as per the
constitution. These are also the required languages or mediums of instruction in school
subjects, with other regional languages serving only as an auxiliary or supplement to formal
literacy instruction. Moreover, among the 187 languages, there are only 8 major dialect
spoken by the Filipinos; Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, Bicolano, Waray,
Pampango, and Pangasinense. However, most of the Filipinos speak only three (3) languages;
there mother tongue, Tagalog, and English. For instance, Kapampangan people can speak in
Pampango, Tagalog, and English. Including, the Waray people, they can speak in Waray,
Tagalog, Cebuano, and English.
Many other ethnic groups can effectively communicate in three or more languages, and this
versatility proves that Filipinos are intelligent and proficient when it comes to learning, and
adapting to new dialects or languages. As a result, Philippines is claimed to be one of the
world's top ten linguistically diverse countries.
