II. Subject/Skill:
● Subject: Shakespeare
● Skill: How Shakespeare has shaped & continues to shape modern media
III. Objective(s):
● After watching the video on Shakespeare, students will be able to complete the crossword
puzzle with 80% accuracy.
IV. Procedures:
● Teacher will begin class by welcoming students and introducing the video that they will
be watching. Will explain that the video will focus on the ways that modern media is
shaped by Shakespeare’s contributions to literature. Will remind students to do their best
to focus and pay attention, as they will have to complete a crossword puzzle once they
have finished watching the video. The crossword puzzle will check their knowledge of
what they learned in the video.
● Teacher will stop the video occasionally to check if the students have any questions, or to
give some added information/explanation to go along with the video.
● *Cooperative Learning Strategy (Learning Together)*:
After students have finished viewing the video, teacher will split students into groups of
four, and they will work together in their groups to complete the crossword puzzle.
Teacher will give each group a crossword puzzle handout. Will let students know that
they will be turning in one paper with all group members’ names on it.
V. Materials:
● Shakespeare video
● Computer
● Projector
● Smartboard
● Crossword puzzle handout
● Writing utensil
VII. Modifications:
● Learning disabled (dyslexic) student & second language learner: Because a crossword
puzzle, specifically, might create an obstacle for these students, they will both have the
option to do an alternate assignment. The alternate assignment will cover all of the same
information, but will be fill in the blank questions instead of the puzzle format. If the
students would prefer to do the crossword puzzle, however, they may. If this is the case,
students will be placed in a group with the gifted students, to hopefully help aid any of
their reading struggles.
● Gifted students: As mentioned above, the gifted students will be placed into a group with
the learning disabled student & the second language learner so that those students have
the best opportunity to understand and complete the crossword puzzle. Additionally, this
will be beneficial to the gifted students, because it will take some time for them to help
the others, rather than if they were only focused on answering the questions/filling in the
puzzle. If the students choose, however, to do the alternate assignment, the gifted students
will simply have the option to complete a second, more detail-oriented crossword puzzle
if they complete their work too easily/quickly.
VIII. Assessment:
● Teacher will ask the class if they have any questions or concerns about today’s lesson and
encourage honesty/feedback. If each group completes the crossword puzzle with 80%
accuracy, teacher will know that the students have mastered the identified learning
objective. While collecting completed crossword handouts from each group, teacher will
let students know that in the next class, students will be selecting a modern piece of
media to write a paper about, in which students will analyze the ways in which that media
was influenced by Shakespeare’s contributions.
