Simple Present

Singular Plural Notice: the verb after she, he, it (3rd

The simple Present: negative

They do no drink coffee. Do and does are called’helping verbs’
b. She does not drink coffee. Notice in (b) : 3rd person singular,
He does not drink coffee. there is no –s on the main verb; the

In correct: she does not drinks coffee.

c. I don’t drink tea. Contraction :


They don’t have a car. do not = don’t

People usually are contractions when

The Simple Present : yes/no questions

Do/does + S + main verb Questions forms, simple present


a. Do you like candy?
Do I, you, we, they + main verb
b. Does he like candy? (simple form)
Does she, he, it + main verb
(simpple form)
Notice in (b): The main verb in the
question does not have a final –s.
The final –s is part of does.

Incorrect : does Bob likes coffee?

d. Where does Ann live? In French.
Note: (a) and (c) are called’yes/no quesions’. The answer to these
quuestions can be yes or no. (b) and (d) are called ‘information
questions’. The answer gives information. When asks for information
about place.
Notice the example: the form of yes/no question and information question
is the same :
DO/DOES + SUBJECT + MAIN VERB

B: Yes, she does. ( Jean eats lunch at the cafetaria everyday).
