Controlled: Operating Procedure Intergranular Corrosion Test Practice "B" As Per ASTM A262-02a

This document provides operating procedures for conducting an intergranular corrosion test according to ASTM A262-02a. It describes preparing a test solution by mixing ferric sulfate, sulfuric acid, and water then boiling. Test specimens of specific dimensions are placed in the solution and boiled for 120 hours. The procedure is used to test stainless steel specimens, especially extra-low carbon and stabilized grades, for susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after optional sensitizing heat treatments.

INTERGRANULAR CORROSION TEST Rev. : 01

PRACTICE “B“ AS PER ASTM A262-02a

1.0 SCOPE:
This practice describes the procedure for conducting the boiling 120-h ferric sulfate–50
% sulfuric acid test which measures the susceptibility of stainless steels to
intergranular attack. The presence or absence of intergranular attack in this test is not
necessarily a measure of the performance of the material in other corrosive
environments.

2.0 APPRATUS REQUIRED

Polishing Machine, 1-L Erlenmeyer flask, Weighing Balance, Hot Plate.

3.0 TEST SOLUTION

3.1 Prepare 600 mL of the solution is as follows:
3.1.1 Measure 400.0 mL of distilled water and pour into the 500ml Erlenmeyer
flask.
3.1.2 Measure 236.0 mL of reagent grade sulfuric acid of a concentration from
95.0 to 98.0 weight % in at 250-mL graduate. Add the acid slowly to the water in
the Erlenmeyer flask to avoid boiling by the heat evolved.
3.1.3 Weigh 25 g of reagent-grade ferric sulfate (contains about 75 % Fe2(SO4)3)
and add to the sulfuric acid solution.
3.1.4 Add boiling chips.
3.1.5 Place the copper piece into one glass cradle and put it into the flask.
3.1.6 Cover the flask with the condenser and circulate cooling water
3.1.7 Boil the solution until all ferric sulphate are dissolved.

4.0 TEST SPECIMEN

A specimen having a total surface area of 15mm L x 15mm W (5 to 20 cm 2) is
recommended.

5.0 SENSITIZATION:
Extra-low–carbon grades, and stabilized grades, such as 304L, 316L, 317L, 321,
and 347, are tested after sensitizing heat treatments at 675°C (1250°F), which is

the range of maximum carbide precipitation. These sensitizing treatments must be

applied before the specimens are submitted to the oxalic acid etch test. The most
commonly used sensitizing treatment is 1 h at 675°C (1250°F).
6.0 PROCEDURE
6.1 Polish the specimen upto 120 grid emery sheet.
6.2 Measure the dimensions of the specimen.
6.3 Wash the specimen using reagent grade acetone and rinsed with distilled
water. Dry it in hot oven.
6.4 measure its initial wt. in gram with accuracy of 0.001gm.
6.1 Place the specimen in the glass cradle, remove the condenser, immerse the
cradle in the actively boiling solution and immediately replace the condenser. A
fresh solution should be used for each test.
6.2 Mark the liquid level on the flask to provide a check on vapor loss which would
result in concentration of the acid. If there is an appreciable change in the level (a
0.5-cm or more drop), repeat the test with fresh solution and with a fresh
specimen.
6.3 Continue immersion of the specimen for the specified length of time i.e.,
120hrs, then remove the specimen, rinse in water and acetone, and dry.
6.4 Weigh the final wt. of the specimen and subtract this mass from the original
mass will give the weight loss in gram.

7.0 EVALUATION BY WEIGHT LOSS:

Calculate the corrosion rates as follows:
Corrosion Rate in Millimeters per month = 7290 x W / A x t x d where
t = time of exposure, h,
A = area, cm2,
W = mass loss, g, and
