Ghawar Oil Field

Ghawar is the world's largest oil field, located in Saudi Arabia. It was discovered in 1948 and first produced oil in 1951. At its peak in the 1980s, Ghawar produced over 5 million barrels of oil per day from the Jurassic Arab-D reservoir alone. In addition to oil, Ghawar also produces billions of standard cubic feet per day of associated and non-associated natural gas from several Paleozoic reservoirs, including the Permian Khuff, Permo-Carboniferous Unayzah, and Devonian Jauf. Careful structural mapping and delineation through the 1950s helped define Ghawar's large anticline structure, which is over 174 miles long and 16

Summary

• Ghawar is a large Hercynian basement horst, which was

reactivated episodically, particularly during the Late Cretaceous.

• The Arab-D carbonate reservoir contains the world’s largest oil

reserves due to the combination of large structure, prolific source,
excellent reservoir quality & effective anhydrite seal. Production ~
5 million B/D under peripheral water drive.

• Ghawar contains large non-associated gas reserves in the deeper

Paleozoic Khuff carbonates and the Permo-Carb & Devonian
sandstones. The main challenge to deep gas exploration &
development is to predict areas of good reservoir quality.
