Socorro Ramos

Socorro Ramos, widely known as Nanay Coring, is the founder of the Philippines' largest retail
bookshop chain, "National Book Company," which employs over 3000 people and has fully
operational subsidiaries. She has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loves to
read and learn. However, things were not always so flawless and gleaming when they initially
appeared. Socorro C. Ramos was the driving force behind the National Book Store's
transformation from a general merchandise store to the Philippines' largest bookstore chain.

Socorro Ramos, at 18 years old, started working as a salesperson in his brother's Goodwill
Bookstore branch in Escolta, Manila, in 1940. Ramos was promoted to shop manager due to
her sales prowess.

She was born into a poor household on September 23, 1923, and went through a real-life
struggle. Her family used to own a modest shop where they could get their daily necessities.
Despite her circumstances, she finished her studies and received a humanities diploma from
Arellano High School in Manila. Ateneo de Manila University bestowed the title of Doctor of
Humanities on her in 2006.
Socorro C. Ramos met the love of her life and her future husband, Jose Ramos, while working
with her brother-in-law. They slowly approached each other and tied knots. Jose Ramos was,
without a doubt, Socorro Ramos' right hand and greatest supporter during the adventure of
bringing the National Book Store to its current state.

She and her husband founded the National Book Store in 1940. In the beginning, everything
went relatively smoothly. However, it is believed that grass on the other side always appears
greener. Here's an interesting fact regarding their path to success: during the early days, their
retail store was devastated by a severe Typhoon. The company suffered a significant loss. This,
however, was insufficient to stop them. They built a double-story building as their permanent
business with a lot of determination and positive thinking.
They used to sell notebooks, pad paper, pencils, and other office goods at that period. They
began producing postcards and greeting cards featuring Philippine Views and Artwork in the
1950s. Through her crafts, she promoted Filipino culture and tradition to the rest of the world.
She later built the company as a brand and acquired the national franchise for Hallmark Cards
by putting in consistent work.

The construction of the storied Albever skyscraper began in 1963. National Bookstore now has
80 locations and 2500 staff across the United States. This retail bookstore chain has since
expanded its operations to include music stores, department stores, gift shops, and
convenience stores. From a humble beginning, Ramos’ National Book Store became the
Philippine’s largest chain of bookstores.

As an entrepreneur Socorro Ramos received some of the country’s notable awards such as:
- Agora Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship (1991)
- DTI Outstanding Filipino Retailer Award (2001)
- Woman Entrepreneur of the Year (2004)
- The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award (2006)
- Filipino-Chinese Federation of Business and Professional Women of the Philippines
Award for Business (2007)

Socorro Ramos also shares business tips for those who intend to start their own business.
These are the 8 tips from Ramos:

1. Determine what you want to do and believe in yourself.

You can aspire to be a business owner, a salesperson, or just about anything else. But,
whichever path you select, strive to be the greatest you can be in your chosen field.

2. The customer is important.

Many argue that the consumer is not always correct. While this is true, Nanay Coring
encourages you to concentrate on your consumer. Always maintain a humble demeanor
and strive to make your customers feel important. This also implies that you must
determine what people desire in order to market it to them.

3. Work very hard.

There is no elevator to success, according to Nanay Coring. If you want to reach your
goals, you must put in a lot of effort.

4. Never be late.
Many Filipinos adhere to 'Filipino time,' but Nanay Coring considers it to be a big no-no!
Always be punctual.

5. Live simply and save up.

Many companies fail because their owners enhance their lifestyles too soon. Instead, put
the money you've made towards expanding your firm.

6. Love what you do.

If you despise what you do, everything will be difficult, but if you adjust your mindset,
everything will become enjoyable.

7. Don’t give up.

When the Ramos couple first began out, things were extremely challenging, but they
persevered and are now where they are.

8. Invest in your mind.

There are numerous ways to make your life and business better. Reading is one of the
best ways to learn new things. Nanay Coring suggests stocking up on books — and then
reading them!
