Problem (1) : Answer of Assignment (4) Design of Flat Slabs

1) The document provides the design of flat slabs for a building with 4 panels in the X direction and 3 panels in the Y direction. 2) The slab thickness is determined to be 240 mm using the empirical method. Loads on the slab are calculated. 3) Punching shear is checked at the interior columns and found to be safe. 4) Bending moments are calculated for strips in the long and short directions. Section properties are designed.

DESIGN OF FLAT SLABS
*Systematic arrangement of calculations and clear neat sketches are essential.
*Any data not given is to be reasonably assumed according to Egyptian Code of Practice.

Problem (1)

2- Live load = 3.25 kN/m2
3- Floor cover = 2.50 kN/m2
4- Equivalent wall load = 2.0 kN/m2
5- Characteristic strength of concrete used = 30.0 MPa
6- The main steel is high tensile steel of grade 40/60

1. Determine the Method of Solution:

As the number of panels in X-Direction = 4 Panels,
The number of panels in Y-Direction = 3 Panels,
L/Ls = 7/6= 1.167 < 1.3,
No different panels at each direction,
LL/DL < 2.0.
Then, we can design the flat slab using Empirical method.

2. Determine Slab Thickness (ts):

As the Flat slab without drop panels or edge beams, then
ts= min of (150 mm or L/32…For Exterior Panels)
ts= 7000/32 = 218.75 mm.
Then, use ts = 240 mm.

3. Calculate Loads on Slabs (Wus):

D.L= O.W of Slab (ts ɣc) + F.C + Eq. Wall load = 0.24*25+2.5+2.0=10.5 kN/m2.
L.L=3.25 kN/m2.
L.L/D.L=3.25/10 =0.309<0.75 then,
Wus=1.5*(D.L+LL) =1.5*(10.5+3.25) =20.625 kN/m2.

4. Check the dimension of Columns:

b (col.) = max of (300 mm, h/15 or L/20);
b (col.) = max of (300 mm, (3250/15= 216mm) or (7000/20=350mm)) < 600 mm Ok.

Then, use Column dimension (600 X 600) mm.

5. Check of Punching Shear:

A = B= b col. + d=0.6+0.22= 0.82 m.
Qup = Wus (L1*L2 – A*B) =20.625* (7*6- 0.82*0.82) = 852.4 KN.
bo = 2(A+B) = 2 * (0.82+0.82)= 3.28 m
qup =β * Qup / bo*d
For interior columns, β=1.15.
qup =1.15 * 852.4*103 / 3200*220 =1.392 MPa.
qcup= min. of (1.70 MPa), (0.316 *(fcu/ɣc)^0.5) or (0.8*(α d/bo +0.2) (fcu/ɣc)^0.5)
qcup= min. of 1.70 MPa,
= (0.316*(30/1.5)0.5 = 1.413 MPa,
= (0.8*(4*0.22/3.28+0.2) *(30/1.5)0.5 = 1.675 MPa.

Check stresses:-

1.413 > 1.392

qcup > qup

Then Punching Shear is Safe.

6. Take Strip in the Long Direction:

L1=7.0 m. L2=6.0 m.

Mo= [(20.625*6 (7-2/3*0.6)2] /8
7.00 m

Mo = 673.81 kN.m
Width of Column Strip = Ls/2=6/2=3 m
7.00 m

Width of Middle Strip = 6-3=3 m

Width of (C.S) = Width of (M.S);

As the Flat slab with drop panels and without edge beams, then
ts= min of (150 mm or L/36…For Exterior Panels)
ts= 7000/36 = 194.4 mm.
Then, use ts = 200 mm.

3. Determine Drop Panel Dimensions:

(Lx/3) ≤ X ≤ (Lx/2),
Then, use drop panel dimension = (3.0 x 3.0) m,
(ts/4) ≤ td ≤ (ts /2), Then take td = 50 mm.
t = ts + td = 200+50 = 250 mm.

4. Calculate Loads on Slabs (Wus):

D.L= (ts ɣc) + td (X*X/L1*L2) +F.C + Eq. Wall load

D.L = 0.2*25+ 0.05*[(3*3)/(6*7)]*25+2.5+2.0=9.767 kN/m2.
L.L=3.25 kN/m2.
L.L/D.L=3.25/9.767 =0.3327<0.75 then,
Wus=1.5*(D.L+LL) =1.5*(9.767+3.25) =19.525 kN/m2.

b (col.) = max of (300 mm, (3250/15= 216mm) or (7000/20=350mm)) < 600 mm Ok.
Then, use Column dimension (600 X 600) mm.

6. Check of Punching Shear:

As flat slab with drop panel, then two sections must be checked for punching.
Sec (1-1) out of drop panel.
Sec (2-2) inside drop panel.

Sec (1-1) out of drop:

A = B= X + d=3.0+0.18= 3.18 m.
Qup = Wus (L1*L2 – A*B)
Qup =19.525* (7*6- 3.18*3.18) = 662.6 KN.
bo = 2(A+B) = 2 * (3.18+3.18)= 12.72 m
qup =β * Qup / bo*d
For interior columns, β=1.15.
qup =1.15 * 662.6*103 / 12720*180 =0.332 MPa.
qcup= min. of (1.70 MPa), (0.316 *(fcu/ɣc)^0.5) or (0.8*(α d/bo +0.2) (fcu/ɣc)^0.5)
qcup= min. of 1.70 MPa,

= (0.8*(4*0.18/12.72+0.2) *(30/1.5)0.5 = 0.918 MPa.
Check stresses:-

Qup = Wus (L1*L2 – A*B)
Qup =19.525* (7*6- 0.83*0.83) = 806.6 KN.
bo = 2(A+B) = 2*(0.83+0.83)= 3.32 m
qup =β * Qup / bo*d
For interior columns, β=1.15.
qup =1.15 * 806.6*103 / 3320*230 =1.214 MPa.
