TEST ONE: DIPLOMA TELECOM ENGINEERING

COURE UNIT: RADIO THEORY

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer FOUR Questions
TIME: 3Hrs

Question One (20 MARKS)

a) Assume that you have a wireless application you would like to design, build,
and sell as a commercial product. You have selected a target frequency in
the UHF range. How would you decide what frequency to use, and how
would you get permission to use it?

b) Name three ways that a higher-frequency signal called the carrier can be
varied to transmit the intelligence.

c) Why are audio signals not transmitted directly by electromagnetic waves?

d) Do radio transmissions occur in the VLF and LF ranges? What is the

frequency range of AM radio broadcast stations?

Question Two (20 MARKS)

a) Define modulation. Explain why modulation is necessary or desirable.

b) Name the circuit that causes one signal to modulate another, and give the
names of the two signals applied to this circuit.

c) In AM, how does the carrier vary in accordance with the information signal?

d) What is the name of the circuit used to eliminate the carrier in DSB/SSB
transmissions? State the four main benefits of SSB over conventional AM.

Question Three (20 MARKS)

a) State the relative advantages and disadvantages of synchronous detectors
versus other types of amplitude demodulators.
b) Describe the two basic ways in which amplitude modulator circuits generate
AM.
c) Which type of diode would make the best (most sensitive) AM
demodulator?
d) How does a differential amplifier modulator work?

Question Four (20 MARKS)

a) Name the three key components of a phase-locked loop and write a brief
explanation of how each component works.
b) What happens to an FM signal that has been passed through a tuned circuit
that is too narrow, resulting in the higher upper and lower sidebands to be
eliminated? What would the output of a demodulator processing this signal
look like compared to that of the original modulating signal?
c) What is the main reason why LC oscillators are not used in transmitters
today?
d) What is the main advantage of using a phase modulator rather than a direct
frequency modulator?

Question Five (20 MARKS)

a) Name the five main parts of a PLL frequency synthesizer. Draw the circuit.
From which circuit is the output taken?
b) What circuits are typically part of every radio transmitter?
c) Why are crystal oscillators used instead of LC oscillators to set transmitter
frequency?
d) What is the main advantage and disadvantage of switching amplifiers?
