Unit Exams: You will have an exam after we discuss each rhetorical mode. The format will involve listening, note-taking,
evaluating, responding, and/or synthesizing information from the listening activity.
Group Project: The group project will be a brief presentation about a particular invention/innovation, and it will occur
mid-semester.
Listening Journal: The listening journal will have 2 parts. First, you will record ways that you are listening/note-taking,
and using strategies learned in our class in terms of your other university classes. Second, you will be responsible for
finding one lecture/listening opportunity each week, and then taking notes and responding to the listening.
Daily Work (includes homework): You should be prepared and ready to participate in class each day. Participation means
more than just sitting in class. You must actively engage and contribute to our class. There may be certain activities that I
ask you to complete in class which will then receive “daily work” credit. Homework will be assigned as needed, and it
will very often be something to prepare you for participating in the activities for the following class. Many of your
homework assignments for the semester are already assigned in myEnglishLab
Vocabulary Activities/Quizzes: There will be several vocabulary activities/quizzes that you must complete throughout the
semester. The purpose of these activities is to increase your academic literacy and academic vocabulary.
Final Assessment: There will be two parts to the final assessment. Part 1: Individual Presentation—This will be completed
during the last week of classes before final exams. You will make a 5-7 minute presentation about an agreed topic (more
details to follow). Part 2: Written Exam—The listening exam will bring together all of the skills and student learning
outcomes from the course. You can expect the final exam to be cumulative. The final exam will be on Tuesday,
December 10th, at 7:30 pm, IEP 1, room 9. You are required to take the exam on that day and time. There will be no
exceptions.
Make-up Exams
There are no make-up exams. You may appeal to your instructor for a make-up exam opportunity provided the absence
from the exam is excused.
Extra Credit
No extra credit opportunities are available.
Course Grade
You will receive university credit for passing this course with a final course-grade of ‘C’ or higher. Your home university
may allow you to transfer this credit to fulfill course requirements there, and in that situation, your home university will
determine how to calculate the equivalent grade. Also, if you wish to attend the University of Mississippi in the future (as
an undergraduate student or graduate student), your grade in this course may affect your admission application.
If you are taking IEP courses for-credit, your IEP grades will factor into your overall GPA at the University of
Mississippi. Your grades as an IEP student will be on your University of Mississippi transcript. These IEP grades will
be included when your GPA is calculated, even if you are an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of
Mississippi
Grading Rubric:
3
A final course-grade of C usually recognizes acceptable
C (70-79%) Satisfactory fulfillment; maintaining steady progress toward achieving all
expectations.
Below A final course-grade of D is usually given for minimal adequacy;
D (60-69%)
Satisfactory barely satisfactory effort toward achieving most expectations.
A final course-grade of F is usually issued for egregious
F (<60%) Failing underperformance; consistent inability or unwillingness to meet
threshold requirements
COURSE POLICIES
Attendance Policy: International students, regardless of their visa status, can endanger their residency in the United States
when they do not come to class on a routine basis. Both international and domestic students in U.S. universities could
possibly lose their enrollment status and registration if not attending classes during the first week of the semester.
Therefore, the IEP expects students to attend class regularly.
When students miss class, they might also hurt their grades on homework assignments and in-class assessments.
Instructors are not required to accept late assignments when a student misses class. If a student has a serious reason to
submit an assignment late (i.e., an excused absence), he or she must ask permission from the instructor before the
deadline. Additionally, regardless of whether a student has missed class, he or she is responsible for finding out what was
missed and what assignments are required for the next class.
Students with Disabilities: The official University of Mississippi policy of accommodating students with disabilities: It is
the responsibility of any student with a disability to contact the Office of Student Disability Services (915-7128). Your
instructor will be happy to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities who bring an “Instructor
Notification of Classroom Accommodation” form to class.
Academic Honesty: Please read the “Academic Discipline Policy” in the M Book. Any occurrence of academic
dishonesty will result in automatic failure for the course and possible suspension from the university.
Submission of Assignments: Assignments should be turned in via myEnglishLab, on paper, or on Blackboard as directed.
Late work will not be accepted.
Group Work and Student Collaborative Policy: Students collaborate and work together on projects regularly in this
course. A sense of teamwork and a sense of humor are highly useful and appreciated.
Classroom Behavior, Decorum and Civility: Please be respectful to others in the class and engage in civil discourse when
we discuss topics that have a diversity of perspectives. Please minimize distractions by not reading newspapers or
carrying on conversations. Turn mobile phones off during class. Please help me maintain the most courteous
environment by using a little peer pressure if necessary. Thank you.
Cultural Café: Each Friday, The Office of International Programs hosts the Cultural Café, a time for you to have coffee
and chat with other members of the Ole Miss community. This year, the Writing Center will host the Cultural Café in
Lamar Hall (3rd floor) from 2-4 pm every Friday.
The Learning Center: The IEP is happy to announce that the Learning Center is now open in IEP 1, room 13. The
Learning Center will take walk-in or scheduled appointments, and the tutors can help you with homework, class projects,
study skills, and more! For more information, visit our website at iep.olemiss.edu
