Introduction to Nursing Theory: Its History and Significance

• The history of theory development in nursing began with the writings of Florence Nightingale,
"Notes on Nursing" and continues to the present.
• It was not until the second half of the twentieth century that nurses saw the need to develop
nursing knowledge through theory development to transition from vocation to Profession.
• The movement toward professionalism has evolved through different eras - the eras of nursing
knowledge.

The eras of nursing knowledge are as follows:

1. Curriculum Era (1900-1940s)


• This era emphasizes courses included in nursing programs.
• The goal is to develop specialized knowledge and higher education.

2. Research Era (1950s-1970s)


• This era emphasizes the role of nurses and what to research.
• The emerging goal is that, recognition that isolated studies do not yield unified knowledge.

3. Graduate Education Era (1950s-1970s)


• Emphasis is caving out an advanced role and basis for nursing practice.
• The emerging goal is to focus graduate education on knowledge development.

4. Theory Era (1980-1990s)


• The emphasis is that there are many ways to think about nursing.
• The emerging goal is that theories guide nursing research and practice.

5. Theory Utilization Era (21st Century)


• The emphasis is that nursing theory guides research, practice, education, and administration.
• The emerging goal for this era is that nursing frameworks produce knowledge (evidence for
quality care).

Highlights and Significant Events in Nursing History

1. Florence Nightingale
• "Notes on Nursing"

2. Colombia School (The 1950's)


• The need to prepare nurses at the graduate level for administrative and faculty
positions was recognized.
• Develop graduate program
• Theorist of Colombia school operated from a biomedical model that focused on what
nurses to do, that is their functional roles.

3. Yale School ( The 1960's)


• Fucoses on theorical thinking in nursing
• Nurse and Patient Relationship
• Influenced by Colombian teacher
• View nursing as a process rather than an end it self ; Their theories look how nurses do
what they do and how the patient perceives his or her situation.
4. The 1970's
• This decades that many nursing theories were presented.
• Most of theories have been revised since their original presentation.

5. The 1980s
• Many nursing theories were revised based on the research findings that expand them.

6. The 1990s
• Research studies that tested and expanded nursing theory were numerous.
