1.4 CABLING PERFORMANCE
!
Cabling systems vs. Mix & Match

• The cabling standards were written to enable mix &

match
• However, it looks different in reality

Cabling systems offer a number of benefits:

• Components matched to each other

• Everything fits nicely together
• High performance
• Backed by a 25 years warranty
• Peace of mind for installer and end-user.

1.6 INSTALLATION Cabling installation issues

GUIDELINES Transmission parameters such as Insertion Loss, Impedance, Cross-Talk,

Return Loss can be adversely affected by:

 Too great pulling tension

 Too small bend radius
 Cable kinks or twisting
 Poor cable support practices
 Cable ties applied too tightly and too far apart
 Twist pairs unravel too much during termination process
 Mixing of components of different categories
 Incompatible patch cords

Remember this:

The performance of twisted pair cable depends mainly on

maintaining the cable geometry along the length of the cable

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 38

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
APPLYING PULLING TENSION
The maximum pulling tension for installation data cables:

• Cat. 7/7A, 8.2 S/FTP 4 pair AWG 23 cable 100 Newton ( 10 kg )

• Cat. 6A U/FTP, F/UTP 4 pair AWG 23 cable 100 Newton ( 10 kg )
• Cat 6 UTP 4 pair AWG 23 cable 100 Newton ( 10 kg )
• Cat 5e U/UTP 4 pair AWG 24 cable 80 Newton ( 8 kg )

• These tensions are light hand tensions

• Do not ‘throw your weight’ into pulling twisted pair cable
• Leave bends and angled conduit sections unscrewed, if possible, to
allow straight cable pulling
• The conduit with cable installed should then be placed in position and
conduits assembled

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 39

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
MINIMUM BENDING RADIUS
• Cable under stressed condition: • Patch cord
 Minimum bending radius R: ~50mm or 8x cable Ø  Minimum bending radius R: ~25mm or 4x cable Ø

• Cable is not under stressed condition: • Excessive bending will cause the twisted pairs to change
 Minimum bending radius R: ~25mm or 4x cable Ø their geometric shape resulting in impedance changes.

Bending radius R Bending diameter Cable is kinked

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 40

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
CABLE SUPPORT & SECURING PRACTICES
• Prevent cable jacket being damaged
 Do not dress installation cables against sharp
edges e.g. cable tray, angled bends, cut-off cable
trays etc.

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 41

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
CABLE SUPPORT & SECURING PRACTICES
• Cable bundles:
 In general, for Cat. 6, 6A & above categories: max. 2x 24
cables per bundle
 Recommended 1x 24 cables per bundle
• Cable slack:
 'U-shaped' loops, or coils of 300 mm Ø adequately
supported
• Cable placement on cable tray:
 For Cat 6, 6A & above, use of VELCRO is strongly
recommended
 Do not stack the cable bundle more than 3 layers

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 42

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
WIRE TERMINATIONS AT THE MODULES / JACKS
• Do not exceed wire pair untwist
 maximum 10 mm for Cat. 6 cable
 maximum 5 mm for Cat 6A & above categories
• Common termination faults is excessive untwisting of
the pairs prior to insertion into the IDC contacts
Max. 10mm for Cat 6;
Copper 5mm for Cat 6A
Dielectric
Constant, d
k Insulation

ZO = (256/k) log(2D/d)

The effect of untwisting pair is increasing the

cable characteristic impedance Zo at the matting
point of RJ45 jack and plug !
TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 43
1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
GROUNDING & BONDING
• Grounding and Bonding is a very important and critical
installation for data cabling system.

• Grounding and Bonding is a MUST for shielded cabling

installation with FTP, F/UTP, S/FTP, F/FTP Cat 6, Cat 6a,
Cat 7, cat 7a and Cat 8.1 or 8.2 cables

• Lack of proper grounding and bonding installation in a

commercial building for small, medium Telecommunication
Room ( TR ) and Data Center can lead to degradation of
data transmission performance, due to Electromagnetic
Interference, trip of circuit breakers due to grounding fault

• In worst case scenario it can cause fire spark in the cabling

due to grounding potential differences!

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
GROUNDING & BONDING; PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 46

1.6 INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
GROUNDING & BONDING
• Typical bonding connections are made using:
 Bolts or crimps such as connectors, clamps, lugs
 Exothermic welding, a seamless bond of metals applied
to:
 connection with the ac grounding electrode system
 part of grounding system component that are subject
to corrosion
 buried connections or submersion in water
 bonds to building structural steel
 Follow manufacturer’s guidelines

BEND INSENSITIVE FIBER*
*: also called Reduced bending Radius Fiber ( RBR )

• Multimode and singlemode; but mostly used is for singlemode

• Very tight bend radius (few millimeters)
• Standards:
• Multimode: IEC 60793-2-10 (bend insensitive, “BI”)
• Singlemode: ITU-T G.657
• Not all are backwards compatible to legacy fibers!
Always consult the data sheet or the manufacturer’s warranty!

OPTICAL WINDOW
Light of dedicated wavelengths („optical windows“) is
transmitted over the fiber

The most common optical window used are:

1. Window: 850 nm LAN
2. Window: 1300 nm MM / 1310 nm SM LAN and WAN
3. Window: 1550 nm WAN
4. Window: 1625 nm WAN

ZERO WATER PEAK FIBER
• Some wavelength ranges are not ideal for transmitting light due to high
attenuation:

• Around 1383 nm resonance caused by OH- ions („waterpeak“) Attenuation

(dB/km)
• Solution: No „waterpeak“ ; due to optimized manufacturing process,
fibres are suitable for CWDM systems
• refer to standards ITU G.652c and G.652d

HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Alternative A and B Applications:
• WLAN Access Points, IP cameras, VoIP phones,
• PSE typically uses alternative A or B access control, time recording, ...
• Building automation, LED lighting, ...
• PD can work with both!
• PSE senses, if PD uses PoE
• When PSE detects PoE PD, it raises the power
level until max. usable by PD

THE ISSUES WITH POE & POE+
Heating when running PoE+ Sparc erosion when disconnecting under load

HEATING ISSUES WITH POE & POE+
• The higher the category cable, the lower the
temperature rise (in general)

• At levels above 60W, the heat rise for 100-cable

bundles running PoE can cause:

• Increased Insertion Loss ( Attenuation )

• Reduced cabling performance

MANAGING CABLE HEAT RISE
• The relevant standard for managing cable heat rise
are ISO TS 29125 and TIA TSB 184-A standards

• Bundle sizes to limit temperature rise to 15°C with a

60°C cable

• Assumes 45°C ambient and power on all 4 pairs

TELEGAERTNER INSTALLER CERTIFICATION TRAINING S.E.A. 154

5.0 POE & POE+
MANAGING CABLE HEAT RISE
• Use wire cable trays or similar cable management

• Allows for largely unrestricted airflow around the

cables or cable bundles

• Keep cables loosely bundled

• If bundled, smaller bundles are recommended

• Limit the number of cables per bundle to 24

RECOMMENDED MEDIA SELECTION
• ISO/IEC 11801-6 Ed1.0 & ISO TS 29125:
• Class EA or higher

• TIA TSB-184-A-2017:
• Class EA or higher

• Shielded cable dissipates heat better than

unshielded cable

• Typically qualified for higher temperature (75°C)

operation

• Reduced cable length; de-rating

SPARC EROSION
• Unmating connectors under load causes sparcs

• Sparcs cannot be avoided or suppressed in an RJ45

connection

• Sparcs erode and damage the contacts

• Eroded parts cannot be used for data transmission

anymore

• The higher the electrical current, the more severe

damage becomes

SPARC EROSION
• Eroded areas nearly in one line Eroded areas scattered over large area
• Contacts in one plane Bent contacts
• -> current distributed evenly -> current distributed unevenly
• -> contacts unmated evenly -> contacts unmated unevenly
• Small scrub marks Large scrub marks
• Area of data transmission far from scrub marks and Area of data transmission near to scrub marks and eroded
eroded area areas
• Reliable and long-term performance Problems regarding function and performance expected
