Microbial Corrosion: Corrosion of Iron by Sulfate-Reduc Ing Bacteria: New Views of An Old Problem
MICROBIAL CORROSION
The role of micro organisms on corrosion has been known for a long time . Especially in food,
petroleum and water transport, ships. However, recent studies has shown that the contribution
of bacteria on corrosion is much more extended that expected.
For the initiation of microbial corrosion a “bio film” formation is the first step. Thus this type of
corrosion is observed in stqgnant environments. Once formed it is very difficult to get rid of the
biofilms
MICROBIAL CORROSION
Sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) is on the well-known anaerobic bacteria types that cause
corrosion on steel, stainless steels and cast irons.
These bacteria (SRB) do not oxygen to survive. They create the energy required for their survival
by reducing sulphur based compounds (sulphates, sulfide, thiosulphate). The reaction products
of this reduction processes are HS- and H2S which accelerate the corrosion of the metal under
the biofilm. When you drop HCl on corroded areas by SRB you smell hydrogen sulphide
Other bacteria such as sulphur oxidizing, iron oxidizing, manganese oxidising that accelartae the
corrosion of metals also exist. Bactria may also produce organic acids during thair life cycle
which also exerts negative effect on the corrosion of metals

MICROBIAL CORROSION
Austenitic stainless steel pipe newly installed to replace ordinary carbon steel pipes
that lasted for 10 years with frequent perforations that are repaired by welding
System: Emergency fire extinguishing line of a jetty transporting petroleum in and out
to tankers
Environment: Sea –water (Mediterranean)
Corrosion damage: Pits concentrated on the bottom of the pipe contact with sea water.
Duration: 3 months
Cause: Accelerated pitting due to bacterial activity in the stagnant water accumulated at
the bottom of the pipes
