TESOL PROGRAM

January 18, 2022

Greetings from the TESOL Program at Teachers College!

We are delighted and, above all, grateful for your willingness to collaborate with the Teachers
College ESOL Initial Certification Program. We wish to provide you with information to clarify the
student teaching process and procedures. Please also feel free to explore the resources provided for
cooperating teachers by our Office of Teacher Education: https://www.tc.columbia.edu/office-of-
teacher-education/cooperating-teachers/

Please note that student teachers must log 220 hours in the school community this semester. They
must also teach a minimum of 12 planned lessons (substantive mini-lessons that are followed by
workshop or guided practice facilitated by the student teacher would count). You will be asked to
sign off on a log verifying these hours.

Your student teacher will be observed (online) four times by a TC representative (TC faculty
member and/or field supervisor). These visits will be announced, and will follow the clinical
supervisory model, utilizing the rubric included in the packet. We ask that student teachers plan
these observed lessons using our lesson template, which is also included in the packet.

We also ask that you complete one formal observation using our rubric, which is included in the
packet. Please complete this observation by Wednesday, April 27, 2022. Please forward your
filled-out rubric to me at scc2120@tc.columbia.edu. We also ask you to complete an informal
midterm report, which is also included in the packet. Please also send this to me by Wednesday,
March 9, 2021.

If, at any time, you wish to reach the TESOL Program, please do not hesitate to contact me at
scc2120@tc.columbia.edu. My cell phone number is: 917-657-8623. Once again, we thank you for
all you do for our program and for the multilingual learners of New York.

Sincerely,
Sarah
