English 101

Final Examination

David Moore

Type your answers in RED below each question/prompt.

5 pts. each
1. Explain what the importance of the Rhetorical Triangle as described in your handbook.

The interaction between a write, topic, and audience. It insures that the topic will hold interest for

the audience and is something that the writer can write about.

2. Briefly describe three different prewriting techniques.

Brainstorming is where once you have a general topic, you turn off the editor in your brain, and

write down absolutely everything and anything that comes to mind. As you write down ideas it

tends to generate other ideas and leaves you with a possible list for your paper.

In Freewriting you start writing your paper, it doesn’t matter how good it is, or what you put

down. You just don’t stop writing until the end of the paper. Then you go back, organize the

information, and put it into a readable form.

Outlining is when you set up a generalized idea of your paper, what you want to write about and

in what order. This needs to be flexible and allow you to change over time as your ideas of the

paper change.

3. Describe what a writer does when revising a paper.

Start reading from the beginning of the paper, track the changed you make, so you are aware of

everything you’ve done by the end of the paper, if you can’t do this, make multiple drafts. Print

out hard copies so you can get a look at the whole thing and look at the printed copy. Look to

see if all your sentences are the same length or if you need more variety. Check for purpose,

thesis, does it fit your audience, organization and development.

4. Describe the difference between revising and editing.

Revising should focus on spelling, grammar and punctuation, while editing is about readability, and

ability to be understood.

5. What is a comma splice? A fused sentence? How can these errors be repaired?

Comma splice is a punctuation error in which two or more independent clauses in a compound

sentence are separated only by a comma and lack a coordinating conjunction.

Fused sentence is a punctuation error in which there is no punctuation between independent

clauses in the sentence.

These can be fixed by using correct punctuation in your sentences, such as a semi-colon, or

ending one sentence with a period and starting a new one.

6. Define paraphrasing as applied to a research paper.

It is the restatement of information from another source, but in your own words with citations.

7. In a research paper, what should be cited?

Everything that is non-generalized information or not common knowledge. Any information taken

from any outside source of any kind.

8. Explain four reasons why plagiarism is wrong.

Plagiarism is stealing the works of others and claiming it as your own, it is taking the work others

have done in a subject and claiming you did that work. It is dishonest, is the equivalent of cheating,

and can get you a 0 on a paper.

9. Describe the purpose of signal words and phrases in a research paper.

It can be used to direct your readers to the works cited page, making it clear where the information

came from, and that the information is not your own. This helps you avoid plagiarism.

10. Give three reasons for using a direct quote in a research paper.

it remain as is, and not be changed.

Reflective Essay - 50pts.

Write an essay that considers the following:

Take some time to consider your experience in ENG 101 and, using the various writings you have
produced and the comments and marks made by your instructor as a guide, discuss what you have
learned about academic writing, in general, and your own writing, specifically, over the course of the
semester. Describe how the use of technology in the classroom has impacted your learning in this class.
What do you think could have been done to enhance your experience this semester?

This course has been a rollercoaster for me, ups and downs all throughout. I really enjoyed most of your
teaching style, much better than the last teacher, you actually taught. While I enjoyed the I am From
assignment, and the descriptive essay, probably my favorite thing we did was Sensory Exercise. One of
the things I definitely learned in this class is that writing can be enjoyed, with the right teacher and the
right assignments it doesn’t seem like such a burden. I have definitely improved my abilities in the
technical part of writing, which I was very weak in before the last few assignments. The technology used
in this class was enjoyable for me. Its much easier and quicker for me to type out a few page paper on a
computer, than it is for me to write it all down. While hand writing has a few advantages, and still used
it for things such as brainstorming, the use of technology in this class made it easier. It also let me see
how I can use it to lessen the burdens of papers in the future.
