WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

This lesson presents the effects of a sudden change in speech

context, speech style, speech act, and communicative strategy to the

audience, the message and delivery.

communicative strategy affects the roles and responsibilities of the
speaker, message, and delivery.

delivery based on a specific speech context;

• Do all situations have the same roles and responsibilities of the speaker,
message and delivery? Expound your answer.
• If you were to choose one among the given situations, what would it be
and how are you going to establish your responsibilities, message and
delivery?

3
WHAT IS IT

The role of the speaker in every communication process is very

crucial. He or she must know the kind of situation that a
communication occurs. It is always best to remember that new situation
results to new roles and responsibilities of the speaker, new message,
and most of all is the new way of delivery. Among the roles and
responsibilities of the speaker are generally to research the topic, know
what is going to be talked about, understand the status of the audience
and their expectations, give the intended message to the audience, and
deliver it according to the purpose and situation. As a speaker, it is also
a responsibility to determine how to make the speech meaningful,
valuable and actionable for the audience. Thus, the congruence
between the message and the situation is a must. The flexibility of the
speaker to adapt different speaking situations would be the key to
success. For example, a politician’s campaign speech has different
message from a President who is delivering a State of the Nation
Address. In a campaign speech, the message is more of convincing the
minds and hearts of the people to cast their votes in favor of the speaker
while in the State of the Nation Address, the President’s message is
focused not to convince but to inform the people on the status of the
country. Consequently, these different messages would result to
different way of delivery.

4
WHAT’S MORE

Task 4

Directions: Use the 2 speeches below to accomplish what are asked

in the table. Do this on your notebook.

Speech #1 “Struggle Makes You Stronger”

Imagine if you got what you want, every time. No struggle. No hard work. No
challenges. No hard work required.
Some of you are saying… that would be great… You would be weak!
And then, when something hard comes up in your life, you wouldn’t know how to
handle it, because you have never gone through anything that strengthens you.
You cannot GROW
without struggle. You cannot develop STRENGTH without resistance, without
challenging yourself, without struggle.
PAIN is your friend. Maybe not in the moment. But for the evolution of your soul,
for the long-term benefit of you as a stronger human being – pain IS YOUR
FRIEND.

If you didn’t have failures… If you didn’t have struggles… If you didn’t have disappointment, you
could have no strength, no courage, no compassion. How could you? Those qualities are MADE
from your pain and struggle.
You were given pain because you are strong enough to handle it. You were given
this LIFE because you are strong enough to live it. Because you are strong enough
to drive through it. To THRIVE THROUGH IT. To inspire others through it.
They will look to you and say:
He did it,
She did it,
I have the strength to do it to.

You are stronger than you think. You’ve survived all your challenges to this point…
And you will survive whatever is coming. But next time a struggle comes I don’t
want you to curse the skies. Know that it was sent for a reason and a lesson. It
might be to make you stronger; it might be to teach your patience, it might be for
you to show others your spirit, there is a reason.
So, don’t you give up. You have a purpose in this world. And you will only find it if
you keep going and keep GROWING.

Speech # 2

Welcome, everyone!

Tonight’s Indian Cultural Night has been a great success. As club president,
I’m truly thankful to everyone who volunteered their time. I can tell every person here
is committed to helping keep this club going strong, and it’s really inspiring to see.
This celebration of culture through dance, food, and language has stood the
test of time, and tonight’s event marks the 15th anniversary. I hope you all enjoy
yourselves tonight!

Before we get to the eating and the dancing, there are a few people I want to
thank for their amazing work these past few weeks. For doing all the invitations,
flyers, and every other type of promotional work you can think of, I want to
acknowledge the kind folks at Sunny Press. They have taken this organization’s
countless ideas and made them better than we could have imagined.
I also want to thank Ramiya’s for catering this feast. As much as I would have
loved to cook for all of you, I don’t think my kitchen is nearly big enough, and
Ramiya’s food is the best in the city.

Thanks to our donors, too, who have been extraordinarily generous this year
and really made this event possible. Another big thanks to Sunil Patel for getting us
this beautiful venue and handling all the details of planning such an epic event.
And last but not the least, I want to thank you all for coming. Without your continued
support, we would never be able to put on events like these, so thank you. Cheers!
