Let’s solve a real
Take-home
assignment
Let’s solve
step by step
Frame the Problem

Use a framework to demonstrate your thought process

clearly, before starting the analysis:

Restate the objective of the assignment in simple terms (3–5 bullets)

List key questions to show that you comprehend the business needs.
You likely will not have the opportunity to get complete guidance from
the interviewer (maybe a little guidance from them is possible).

Keep it simple and make it clear how the questions relate back to the
assignment
Explore Key Data

Understand data thoroughly

Understand data field, its types and relation amongst them. Also, based
on the issues in the data try to clean, transform and create.

Define KPIs that you will use to answer key questions. Consider including
a technical definition to make it extra clear (for example, a formula for
each KPI).
Exploratory Data Analysis

Analyze the KPIs to report any insights and conclusions that

can be drawn from the data:

Look at the overall trends for your KPIs and plot the data.

Quantify trends that seem the most important to your KPIs (key numbers,
takeaways, or maybe something surprising in the data). Focus on
actionable findings relevant to the assignment, rather than data that is
just “interesting.”

This is where you should show off your technical skill.

Communicate
findings/insights
Build Recommendations

Give recommendations to the business on how to improve

the performance of their KPIs:

Select 2–3 additional metrics to support findings from the exploratory

analysis. These metrics/new findings should likely relate directly to the
user or business performance.

List core assumptions with your approach. It is OK if the analysis is not

perfect. In the real world, you will usually be working with more limited
information than you would like. Though it is important to communicate
your assumptions to your stakeholders.
Suggest Areas of Future Exploration

Identify areas for further analysis which could improve and

solidify your recommendations:

What additional data would you want to support your analysis? This
could be new data or improvements to the existing data.

Try to quantify how important these questions or data are for the
business. What would the impact be if the business invested in these
areas?
Executive Summary

Summarize your analysis and recommendations:

Summarize your findings for business stakeholders (non-technical).

Usually in the form of a slide deck presentation (e.g. PowerPoint).

Keep your Executive Summary no more than 3–5 slides of content (the
shorter, the better). This is hard, but cut content through prioritization.
Only include points that are the most important to the business (for
example, highest ROI or critical for success).

Strike a balance between sharing insights and making recommendations

to improve KPI performance.
