Utilities Assignment

This document provides a solution to determining the cooling capacity required for a spinning unit based on given dimensions and conditions. It calculates the total sensible and latent heat gains from various sources such as walls, roof, floor, doors, windows, people, lighting, machines, and infiltration. The total sensible heat gain is found to be 55,306.13W and total latent heat gain is 91,256.78W, giving a total heat load of 146,562.9W or 146.562KW. Applying a safety factor of 1.25, the required cooling capacity is determined to be 183.2KW or approximately 52 tons of refrigeration.

QUESTION 2:

In order to control process, production, quality and comfort air conditioning is necessary for
spinning plants. That 15% cost can be overcome by improving quality and production of yarns.
Proper conditioning i.e. desired RH% and temperatures for the specific processes and materials
gives good efficiency and less machine maintenance. Determined the total sensible heat gains,
total latent heat gains and desired cooling capacity for the spinning unit have the following
information available.

Shed dimensions: 28’ high X 25’ wide X 48’ deep

Location: Chicago, summer (July to September), poorly designed
Inside conditions: as per PC yarn spinning
No of Rotors: 30
No of employees: 25
Door: 7’ X 8’
Material processed:
8 Windows facing West: 4’X 4’
Lighting load: 45 W/m2 of floor area

SOLUTION:

OUTSIDE CONDITIONS OF CHICAGO IN SUMMER:

From ASHRAE Table 4.3: Design data temperature table
TD(dry bulb temperature)=33oC
TW(wet bulb temperature)=23oC
Tavg(average temperature)=23oC
From psychrometric chart
R.H(relative humidity)=43%

INSIDE CONDITIONS OF PC SPINNING UNIT:

R.H(relative humidity)=63%
TD(dry bulb temperature)=27oC

LAYOUT:
We have four walls and a roof made of concrete with membrane sheating R-5.3, insulation board
100mm LW concrete
East wall
West wall with 8 windows
South wall with 1 door
North wall

AREAS OF WALL:
East wall = (28’ x 48’)x (0.305)2 = 125m
West wall = {(28’ x 48’) - (4’ x 4’ x 8’)} x (0.305)2 = 1332.08m
South wall = {(28’ x 25’)-(7’ x 8’)}x (0.305)2 = 694.79m
North wall = (25’ x 28’)x (0.305)2 = 65.11m
AREA OF ROOF/FLOOR:
Aroof = Afloor = (25’ x 48’)x (0.305)2 = 111.63m
We have to find cooling load i.e. how much heat we have to remove from the lab in order to make it
favorable for the work.

CLTD FOR WALL(from table 4.15 - cooling and heating manual)

CLTDadj = CLTD + (25 - ti)+ (tavg -29) ti= inside dry bulb, tavg = outside dry bulb

CLTDeast = 17 + (25-27) + (33 -29) = 19

CLTDwest= 20 + (25-27) + (33 -29) = 22

CLTDsouth = 14 + (25-27) + (33 -29) = 16

CLTDnorth = 9 + (25-27) + (33 -29) = 11

CLTD FOR ROOF(from table 4.14 - cooling and heating manual)

CLTDadj = CLTD + (25 - ti)+ (tavg -29)

CLTDroof= 24 + (25-27) + (33 -29) = 26

TRANSMISSION LOAD FOR ROOF:

Qroof = 0.1696 x 111.63 x 26

=492.24W

TRANSMISSION LOAD FOR WALLS:

Qwall(east) = 0.1696 x 125 x 19

= 401.375 W
Qwall(west) = 0.1696 x 1332.08 x 20
= 4952.67 W
Qwall(south) = 0.1696 x 694.79 x 16
=1878.72W
Qwall(north) =0.1696 x 65.11 x 11
=121.03W
QTotal wall = 401.375+4952.67+1878.72+121.03
= 7346.8 W

TRANSMITTION LOAD FOR DOOR:

Qdoor = 0.65 x 5.209 x 35

=118.5W

TRANSMITTION LOAD FOR FLOOR:

Qfloor = 0.14x 111.63 x 6

=113.59W
Here the value of U for wall, roof and door is taken by ASHRAE table.17 R-5.3and for floor
ASHRAE table 16. For temperature outside the value is taken from the table attached in the end and
for temperature inside it is the required temperature of spinning unit . Area is simply calculated.

TRANSMITTION LOAD FOR GLASS:

Glass type (double glass with no external shadding)
CLF = 1 (consider)
Uglass = 3.12 W/m2K
SC = 0.86 (from stoeker table 4.11)
SHG = 300 W
Area of glass = (4’ x 4’ x 8’)x 0.3052
=11.9 m2
Qglass = Qconduction(s) + Qradiation(L)
Qs = UAΔT
= 3.12 X 11.2 X (33-27)
=209.66 W
QL = A x SHGF x SC x CLF
= 11.2 x 300 x 0.86 x 1
= 2889.6 W
Qglass = 3099.26 W

PEOPLE LOAD
Here sensible as well as latent heat load will be calculated
QS = No. of people x sensible heat gain per person x CLF
= 25x 295 x 0.9
= 6637.5W
QL = No. of people x latent heat gain per person
= 25 x 455
= 11375W
Heat gain is taken from cooling and heating load calculation manual as table 4.5 and CLF is taken
from the same book as table 4.6.

LIGHTENING LOAD

Qlight = wattage x floor area

= 45 x (25’ x 48’) X O.3052
= 5023.35 W

MACHINE LOAD
Rieter R-36 Rotor spinning machine.
Number of rotors = 30
Wattage = 1250 W
QS = Wattage x usage factor x CLF
= 1250 x 24x 0.98
= 27600W

QL is not required because there is an exhaust system with rotors.

CLF is taken from cooling and heating load calculation manual table 4.11.

INFILTRATION LOAD
Qs = minf CP ΔT
Qs = [ACT x ƿV xCP x (To - Tin )]/3600
For ƿ:
Ƿ=1/v (by using psychrometric chart v is taken according to given outside conditions)
=1/0.88 = 1.36
Qs = 2 x 1.36 x 3125.64 x 1021.6 x 6/3600
=12085.52 W

QL = minf hfg (Wo - W in)

= 2.361 x 2501x103 x (0.153-0.14)
=76782.52 W

Wo and Win is taken from psychrometric chart according to given conditions.

Product Load

Qs = mCp (Tenter - Tstore ) / 3600

= 105 x 1021.6 ( 33-27)/ 3600
= 178.78 W

TOTAL HEAT LOAD SENSIBLE = (7346.80)walls + (492.24)roof + (113.59)floor +(12085.52)infiltration

+ (118.5)door + (209.66)glass
+(178.78 )product + (6637.5)people + (5023.35)lightening +(27600)m/c
= 55306.13W

TOTAL HEAT LOAD LATENT = (11375)people + (3099.26)glass + (76782.52)infiltration

= 91256.78 W

TOTAL HEAT LOAD = Sensible + Latent

= 55306.13+ 91256.78
= 146562.9 W or 146.562KW

In order to compensate any fluctuation we multiply total heat load with factor of safety,
Total Q = 146.562 x 1.25
= 183.2 KW

1 ton = 3.5 kW

Q = 183.2 / 3.5
= 52.34≈ 52 tons

Conclusion: 52 tons of refrigeration is required.
