AX 5100 / AX 5200 Power Supply Installation Guide

Document No.: D-030-01-00-0022 – 4/25/2011

Getting Started
This guide describes how to connect an AX Series DC power supply for
model AX 5100 or AX 5200 to a DC power source. This guide also
describes how to insert or extract (“hot swap”) an AC or DC power supply.

Caution: Do not attempt to install or operate damaged equipment. As with any

electrical equipment, personal injury or damage to other equipment
can result from commissioning damaged electrical equipment.

Regulations

Follow all applicable regulations for installation of electrical equipment;

for example, in the United States of America, the National Electrical Code.

Overview
AC or DC power connections are made using a hot-swap power cable, which enables quick and easy
installation of the power supplies without the need to disturb the AC or DC terminal blocks. AC or DC
power is connected to each module separately.

Power Supply Hot Swap
Before extracting a power supply from the chassis, you must disconnect it from the power source. This is
required regardless of whether the power supply is in standby mode or powered on mode.

Likewise, when installing a power supply, insert the supply into the chassis first, before connecting the
power supply to the AC or DC power source.

 Insertion: Input and Output power are connected simultaneously, in either standby mode or
powered on mode, when the power supply is inserted into the chassis.

 Extraction: Input and Output power are disconnected simultaneously, in either standby mode or
powered on mode, when the power supply is extracted from the chassis.

No damage or arcing to Input or Output contacts occurs.

Inserting a Power Supply

1. Push the power supply into the slot.

2. Tighten the safety screw.

3. Plug the DC/AC power cable into the

power supply.

Removing a Power Supply

1. Loosen the safety screw. (a.)

2. Push and hold the panel to unlock the

lock. (b.)

3. Pull out the power supply. (c.)

DC Power Supply Connection
Refer to the following figure for this procedure.

Notes:

 The yellow and black cables come with the DC power supply. The cables are each 6’10” long and
are 12 AWG.
 Each connector has 4 pins but the power supply uses only 2 cables.
 The power supplies are redundant. Each power supply has only one input.
 There is no ground point on the chassis.

FIGURE 1. Connecting the DC power supply cable

1. Insert the DC cable connector into the connector slot on the DC power supply. The connector is
designed to fit only one way. Make sure the connector fits properly, and push all the way in until the
connector snaps into place.

2. Attach the BLACK ground wire to the ground pin on the DC power source. Screw the connector snugly
into place.

3. Attach the YELLOW -48 volt wire to the -48 volt pin on the DC power source. Screw the connector
snugly into place.
