Lab Report: Heat & Mass Transfer
Introduction:
This experiment is the investigation of the heat transfer rate from the observed values.
Apparatus:
Linear heat conduction unit
Control unit
Hydraulic bench
Theory:
Linear heat conduction unit:
A small device that is used to experimentally investigate the linear heat conduction. This is also
used to measure the thermal conductivity of the different materials (both conductors &
insulators).
Procedure:
1. Set the linear heat conduction unit.
2. Install the cork as the specimen.
3. Turn on electric supply.
4. First set the flow rate of water to 1 liter/minute.
24
5. Set the desired voltages on the control unit i.e. >80V.
6. Note down the current (A) at respected voltages.
7. After 30-60 seconds rotate the temperature knob and note down the temperature
measured by thermocouple attached till it becomes constant.

Title:
Unsteady heat conduction
Abstract:
The objective of this experiment is to investigate unsteady state conduction of heat and to use
this in observation of the time to reach stable conditions. This experiment was performed using
the radial heat conduction unit. Further, temperature was determined randomly. Based on the
findings it was concluded that for unsteady heat flow temperature varies with the time and after
some time, it becomes constant.

This experiment is the investigation of the unsteady state heat conduction and to use the
observation in determination of the time to reach stable conditions.

Radial heat conduction unit:
A small device that is used to experimentally investigate the radial heat conduction. This is also
used to measure the thermal conductivity of the different materials (both conductors &
insulators).
Steady State:
If the temperature of the system does not change with the time then it is said to be in steady state.
26
Unsteady State or Transient State:
If the temperature of the system changes with the time and after some time it attains equilibrium
then it is said to be unsteady or transient state.
Procedure:
1. Set the radial heat conduction unit.
2. Turn on electric supply.
3. First set the flow rate of water to 1 liter/minute.
4. Set the desired voltages on the control unit i.e. >60V.

Conclusion:
Based on the observations and calculations it was concluded that for unsteady systems
temperature vary with the period of time. After some time, temperature becomes constant up to 1
decimal point.
