A. Translate each word phrase into an algebraic expression
1. How old will you be in eight years? What age is eight more years than your
age now? Did you add 88 to your present age? Eight more than means eight
added to your present age.
Answer: y+8

2. How old were you seven years ago? This is seven years less than your age
now. You subtract 77 from your present age. Seven less than means seven
subtracted from your present age.
Answer: 9z-7

3. Five times the sum of m and n


Answer: 5(m+n)

4. the sum of five times m and n


Answer: 5m + n

5. The height of a rectangular window is 6 inches less than the width.


Let w represent the width of the window. Write an expression for the height
of the window.
Answer: w-6

B. Translate the following phrases into mathematical expressions or


equations

1. Six less than twice a number is forty-five.


Answer: 6 – 2x = 45

2. A number minus seven yields ten


Answer: x – 7 = 10

3. A total of six and some number


Answer: 6 + x

4. Twelve added to a number


Answer: x + 12
5. Eight times a number is forty-eight
Answer: 8x = 48

A. Translate the mathematical expression into words


1. x + 12 = 8
Answer: The sum of a number and 12 is 8.

2. 3x = 15
Answer: 3 times a number is equal to 15
3. x/15
Answer: The quotient of a number and 15
4. 10/x
Answer: Ten divided by a number
5. x – 6
Answer: Six subtracted from a number.
