CASE STUDY ON SLOW LEARNERS

NAME: Pushpam Kalbalia

COURSE: Bachelor of Education [B. Ed]

ENROLLMENT NUMBER: A90710521019

BATCH: 2021 – 2023 SEMESTER: 1

SUBJECT: Language Across Curriculum [EDU117]

SUBJECT TEACHER: Ms. Amrita Bhattacharyya Ma’am

Introduction

The Piaget`s theory focus on development and learning theories. Development focus on the leaner`s
capabilities and the learning focuses on the realization of such capabilities and the education
within the theory is extrinsic .The cognitive theory, the behavior reflects the emergence of various
psychological structures, organized units or patterns of thinking that influence on how children interpret
the information. Kendra Cherry. (2014)The cognitive developmental theories explain the change in
reasoning level of a child acquiring new ways of understanding their world. Piaget’s theory of
implication assumes that all children go through the same sequence of development, but they do
so at different rates. Teachers must make a special effort to provide classroom activities for individuals
and small groups, rather than for the total class group. Assessment should be based on individual
progress, rather than on the normal standards of same age peers. Individuals construct their own
knowledge during the course of the interaction with the environment.

Jean Piaget Theory of Cognitive Development

Piaget believed that all children progress through four stages and they do so in the same order. Bukatku,
D & Daehler, W. (1995) During each stage of cognitive development there is unique level of analysis,
internal organization and the understanding of the environmental information and events. Piaget`s
theory shows clearly that the child`s understanding is only dependent on the stage that he/she has
reached and teachers ought to take this into account as they teach learners at different levels of
intellectual development .Bukatku, D & Daehler, W.( 1995).

When I observed 5 or 6 years child in my class than I noticed many thing .

1 When I ask question then all child can say sir may I speak and they can enjoy the class very well.
2 One student whose name is krish he always asked sir may I go to toilet or go to drink water .
3 One student Riya she is very talented whenever I asked something if it is tough or easy , she
always give the answer .
4 Whenever I observed him , I am also become a child.

Dealing with slow learner student in the classroom

1 Praise effort, not ability

2 Tell them that hard work always pays off

3 Treat failure as a natural part of learning.

4 Don’t take study skills for granted.

5 Show students that you have confidence in them.

What Are The Characteristics of A Slow Learning Child?

A slow learning child is one that struggles to hit basic developmental milestones that can broadly be
categorised into four groups – developmental, social, personal or educational. Here are a few symptoms
of slow learning child:

Developmental: The characteristics of a child with developmental learning disorders include poor
memory and a delay in speech and language developmental patterns. This means your child could take
longer to start speaking than others or may need more prolonged and repetitive lessons to learn most
concepts.

Social: A child who has social learning disabilities is usually known to relate to children younger to him
more often and avoid interacting with peers. Such children are also prone to behaviour that is
associated with children younger than their age. These children are often just labelled as introverts due
to the inability to connect with their peers leading them to be quieter or more reserved.

Personal: Children with personal learning problems seem to have less control over their emotions.
They tend to fall back to anger quickly, get frustrated faster than most, express emotions like anxiety for
seemingly minor issues or get depressed over setbacks. These children are most likely to have significant
problems with self-esteem, confidence and are prone to acts of aggression or emotional instability.

Educational: Children with learning or educational disabilities take longer to process and
understand the information provided to them. These children may be proficient in intellectual
knowledge, but it takes them longer to understand & grasp the concepts.
Conclusion
Slow learners need extra support from parents and educators alike. No child deserves any less of a
chance. As parents, what we can do is maintain a positive attitude and consistently support our children
to be the best they can be without limitations.

Thank You.
