SITE

• Built into a hillside which slopes towards a lake, a series of


terraces & courtyards comprise the complex.

• Upon entering, the choice of the path of terraces or


moving down the three courtyards.

• The inside of the complex is a medley of courtyards, split-


level exhibition spaces, galleries and performance rooms.

• The visitors enter the highest level and walk down a


pedestrian spine, flanked by a pattern of courtyards.

• Natural contours are well integrated with the building terraces


and courtyards.
• Max Contour on the site: 534 M
• Min Contour on the site: 514 M
• Lake level : 510 M
• Contour intervals : 1 M
• Difference b/w max and min contour: 20 M
CONCEPT
VIEW FROM
ENTRANCE
• Based on the idea of 'non-building', only a glimpse
of the structure is seen from the entrance as if
there is no building at all.

• Due to sloping terrain, building unfolds itself VIEW FROM


when on walks in gradually levelling down. UPPER LAKE &
OLD CITY

• Series of courts and terrace gardens are inspired


from Indian village setting.

SLOPPING TERRAIN
GEOMETRY GRID

• The grid consists of group of 4 columns at


distance of 2 metres each.

• The group is placed at distance of 9


metres from each other.

• This structural framework is adopted


throughout the building.
BUILDING FORM

• The building form is unique and kept simple


based on the column grid.

• The auditorium unique design of RCC shell


which has a skylight on top for natural light to
enter.

• The enclosed areas are grouped around the


sunken courtyards and sits on varied plinths.

• The building is organised on 'regular formal


square modules'.
LANDSCAPING
 Roofs are provided with the grass, keeping the building
cooler

 Open to sky courtyards are made to manage the crowd

 Site determines the landscape of the building which


terminates at the lake, forming Amphitheatre

 The steps are designed on the Indian concept of Ghats

 The sky is even incorporated into the interior spaces of


the site, with concrete ‘shells’ atop the structure
allowing light and air to pour in through their circular
openings.
STRUCTURE

 Retaining walls were made to avoid the landslide


 Coffered slabs were made to avoid the columns
 Outer façade stone walls were 380 mm wide
 Slopes were made for easy passage for handicapped
 Flower beds were made on the roofs of the buildings
 Visitor enter at the highest level and walk down to a pedestrian spine
flanked by a pattern of courtyards
 Each of the part of the building is distinct yet flows easily one another
 Inner walls were 340 mm wide plastered on both sides
 The proportions of the building are well ordered, borrowing geometric
patterns from indian cultures making it relevant to context.
BUILDING MATERIAL

 Red sandstone

 RCC framework

 Flemish bond brick

 Exposed concrete

 Ashlar stone on outer façade

 Marble and granite in internal spaces


CIRCULATION

 Free flow circulation was provided to avoid accumulation at


a certain point.

 No such pattern or way was defined to make people keep


moving in a certain pattern

 Open to sky courtyards were provided to keep people


involved in outer part of the building.

 Open air theatre was provided was made to utilize the view
of adjacent lake.

SCALE & PROPORTION

• The scale and proportion of building are human to nature.

• The individual square module is repeated forms a larger


institutional space.

WIDTH & HEIGHT RATIO PROVIDES EVEM SHADE TO


• The entrance of the courtyard is made by extending a THE OPEN COURTYARDS DURING MUD-DAY PERIOD
horizontal band across two built masses creating a sense
of entrance.

• The width and height ratio provides even shade to the


open courtyards during mid-day period.

COURTYARD ACTING AS SOCIAL SPACES


LIGHT & VENTILATION

• They are provided from the concrete shells and


from slots along the terrace parapet.

• There are 2 sets of shutters between the opening


of courtyards and terraces.

• The inner one consists of combination of fixed


glass and the outer ones consist of large wooden
doors for security purpose.

PERMANENT MUSEUM
• Roopankar/Modern art gallery is
fully equipped workshop for print
making and ceramics.
• Only art museum in India which
houses both tribal art and
contemporary folk with urban art.
• The spaces are characterized by
continuous modulation in the ceiling
and floor.

THE TRIBAL ART GALLERY


• The idea behind is not just to showcase the art work but to
create a contrasting difference between urban and tribal art.
• It tries to create a timelessness experience for the visitor.
AUDITORIUM
THEATRE / ANTARANG
• Indoor auditorium, 300 people of capacity,
seating on 3 sides of the stage. No aisle,
seating and circulation on the same treads.
• Lighting is controlled from the control room.
ABHIRANG
• Coffers above are covered to reduce echoes.

STUDIO THEATRE / ABHIRANG


• An indoor auditorium with capacity of 100 people.
• Fully equipped with maintained sound and electronic system.
ATRANG
AMPHITHEATRE / BAHIRANG
• An outdoor OAT with capacity of 1000 people.
• Stands overlooking the big lake and also the
BHAIRANG
picturesque scene of the old city
SERVICES
ADMINISTRATION
• Also known as Karyalya situated at the right corner of the Bhavan.
• It is the main office for organizing festivals and function.
GREEN ROOM
• All the auditoriums are attached with the green room.
• Each room size is of 20 sqm. With capacity of 20 people.
PRINT SHOP
• It is the creative space for providing a platform of Graphics art.
• Photography, modelling, lithography, drama, dance, painting textiles,
sculpture, pottery and ceramics studios are different spaces under print
shop.
LIBRARY:
 Vagarth is a library of India poetry in 17 major languages.
 Anhad is a library of folks and classic books.
 The two blocks contain a total of 20000 books.
INFERENCES

• The terraces and open to sky spaces bind the built masses into an experiential walk for the visitors.

• Courtyards acts as important tools for place making.

• Site is entirely pedestrian which lack to achieve universal access.

• The nature of public space create is inward looking with volumes containing the inside from the outside.
