TOS III B.Arch

This document appears to be an exam for a Theory of Structures course. It contains multiple choice and long answer questions testing concepts like: - Torsional rigidity and column slenderness ratio - Consistent deformation method for beam analysis - Three moment theorem for continuous beam analysis - Moment distribution method for analyzing statically indeterminate beams and frames - Shear force and bending moment diagrams Students are asked to define terms, explain steps in analysis methods, and apply these structural analysis techniques to solve beam and frame problems. Diagrams must be drawn to illustrate the solutions.

THIRD SEMESTER B.ARCH DEGREE EXAMINATION(S), MAY 2019
Course Code: ES201
Course Name: THEORY OF STRUCTURES III
Max. Marks: 60 Duration: 3 Hours
PART A
Answer all questions, each carries 4 marks. Marks
1 Explain the term torsional rigidity. (4)
2 Explain the term slenderness ratio and discuss the failure of long column. (4)
3 Explain the steps involved in the consistent deformation method. (4)
4 Write the steps involved in analysis of continuous beam by three moment theorem (4)
with support settlement.
5 Differentiate between sway and non sway frames with sketches. (4)

PART B
Answer any two questions, each carries 10 marks.
6 A beam of length 6m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point load of
50KN and 40KN at a distance of 1m and 3m respectively from the left support. Find
by conjugate beam method
1) Deflection under each load (7)
2) Slope at supports (3)
5
E=2X10 N/mm2 and I= 85X106 mm4
7 A rolled beam section has overall depth of 400mm and flange width of (10)
200mm.Thickness of web and flange is 20mm.When it is used as a simply
supported beam produces a mid span deflection 10mm due to a uniformly
distributed load of 30kN/m. Find crippling load when this section is used as column
with both ends hinged. Take E=2 X 10 5 N/mm2.
