Mid Sem Exam

1. This document contains a 9 question midterm exam on analysis and applications of power electronics converters. The questions cover topics like PWM inverters, harmonic analysis, space vector modulation, and dead time effects. 2. Question 1 asks about the advantages of switch-mode inverters over square wave inverters and causes of sub-harmonics. Question 2 involves calculating load current, power, and THD for a PWM inverter supplying an R-L load. 3. Question 3 discusses factors for selecting switching frequency and how modulation index affects inverter performance. Mid semester Exam 2020-21
Analysis and Applications of Power Electronics Converters (EE332)

Last Submission Time: 25 Feb, 11 AM Max. Marks: 45

All questions carry equal marks [5X9]

1. How a switch-mode inverter better than a square wave inverter. Also discuss the causes
of sub -harmonics generation in a PWM switch-mode inverter.
2. A single-phase full-bridge inverter is connected between a 200 V d.c. source and a series
connected R-L load with R = 20 Ω and L = 50 mH. The inverter frequency is 50 Hz.
Determine the values of the rms load current, the load power and the total harmonic
distortion factor, up to the 9th harmonic.
3. Discuss in detail the various factors responsible for the selection of switching frequency
in a PWM switched mode Inverter. Using characteristics and detailed analysis explain
how the selection of amplitude modulation index and frequency modulation index
affects the performance of a single phase Inverter.
4. What is the difference between synchronous and Asynchronous PWM switching
scheme? How do they affect the performance of a switched mode Inverter? Compared
to Bipolar PWM, Unipolar PWM has the advantage of ‘effectively’ doubling the
switching frequency. Justify this statement with relevant waveforms.
5. In a single-phase full bridge full-bridge PWM inverter, the input dc voltage varies in a
range of 295-325 V. Because of the low distortion required in the output vo, ma ≤ 1.0.
(a) What is the highest Vo1 that can be obtained and stamped on its nameplate as its
voltage rating?
(b) Its nameplate volt-ampere rating is specified as 2000 VA (Vo1,max Io,max = 2000 VA)
where io is assumed to be sinusoidal. Calculate the combined switch utilization ratio
when the inverter is supplying its rated volt-amperes.
6. Discuss the effect of ‘blanking time’ on voltage in a single phase PWM Inverter. For a
deadtime of t∆, switching period Ts and input voltage Vd, prove that the change in output
voltage ∆Vo
2t ∆ 2t ∆
∆Vo =+ Vd ∆Vo =− Vd

7. Obtain an expression for the Fourier components of the waveform (shown in Fig. 1) for
programmed harmonic elimination of fifth and seventh-order harmonics. Show that for
α1 = 0, α2 = 16.24˚ and α3 = 22.06˚, the fifth and seventh harmonics are eliminated.

8. How rotating space voltage vector is created using Space vector modulation technique
in a three phase voltage source Inverter. Also enlist the differences between SVM and
Sinusoidal PWM.
9. The SVPWM technique is applied to a 3-phase 440 V, 50 Hz inverter with switching
frequency 5 KHz. Determine
(a) Voltage vectors - Vα and Vβ - at time t = 18 mSec
(b) In which sector Reference vector is located?
(c) Calculate the Time constants (T1, T2, T0) of the active and zero vectors?
(d) Find which active vectors are suitable for this sector and draw the corresponding
switching pattern?
