INTRODUCTION
The curiosity of numerous scientists regarding the nature of atoms paved the way for the
development of the periodic table of elements. Its development became a milestone in the history of
chemistry. It has become an essential part of the language of chemistry. The periodic table serves as
a guide in determining the similarities and differences among elements. It brought order and system
to the presentation of the identity of the atom that comprises each element.
In this module, you will find out how the periodic table became an organizing tool for
determining the chemical properties of elements.
Word Detect!
Open your book on page 246, find five key terms hidden in the puzzle. Then, define each term based
on your own understanding.
By the end of the 1700’s, the earliest known elements were classified into two groups – the metals
and nonmetals. However, this kind of classification did not include gaseous and liquid substances.
Even the solids grouped together varied in color and density. To further understand the History and
Development of the Periodic Table of Elements, general properties of elements, read pages 247-250 of
your science textbook.
Activity
Worksheet Title: Elements Everywhere!
Procedure:
1. In the table (please refer to the answer sheet), identify 3 elements from each of the following
classifications; highly reactive metals, less reactive metals, highly reactive non-metals, and the
nonreactive gases.
2. Write the symbol for each element that you identified.
3. Identify the uses or effects of the elements that you have given.
Guide Questions:
In answering these guide questions, kindly refer to the activity “Elements Everywhere!”
1. Which classification of elements appears to have more uses than the others? Explain.
2. How will you relate the nature of each element to its use?
3. What is the importance of classifying the elements this way?
4. Is there a pattern in the periodic table of elements where these classifications can be identified?
5. What do differences in the reactivity of element tell you about their diversity in nature?
Early attempts to classify elements in the periodic table were done by Dobereiner,
Newlands, Mendeleev and Meyer.
Elements can be classified into highly reactive metals, less reactive metals, highly reactive
non-metals and non-reactive gases.
B. Reflection
The Development of the Periodic Table of Elements shows that there is no constant thing in this world. Things
tend to develop as scientists discovered new things because of technology.
How do innovation and creativity play an important role in the development of our country or for better
changes?
