Corruption - A Big Threat To Development

Corruption undermines democracy by allowing corrupt leaders to weaken checks on their power through electoral fraud and threats in order to stay in power unpunished. It breaks the link between people's votes and participation in decisions, and declines trust in the system. Corruption also hinders economic development by distorting government spending, decreasing revenues, and damaging infrastructure and institutions that growth depends on. It increases inequalities and undermines social programs, resulting in lower human development and living standards for most of the population in countries with high corruption.

Corruption is a form of dishonesty or a criminal offense which is undertaken by a person

or an organization which is entrusted with a position of authority, in order to acquire illicit

benefits or abuse power for one's personal gain.

Corruption is a threat to development, democracy and stability. It distorts markets, curbs

economic growth and discourages foreign investment. It erodes public services and
trust in officials.
When corruption takes its roots into the democratic system, corrupt leaders may seek to
prevent democratic checks and balances so that they can continue to remain in power
unpunished. They often bypass formal institutions which are meant to enable
transparency in government spending and other decisions, while oversight agencies
and the judiciary may be politicised or left weak.
In order to stay in power, corrupt leaders may seek to weaken democratic checks on
their power, for example by constraining political competitions through electoral fraud,
luring or threatening voters as well as purging the civil service and weakening regulatory
agencies. The election procedure is tampered with; real sentiments of the public are
curbed. Corruption breaks the link between collective decision making and people’s
power to influence decisions normally through votes and participation, which is the very
characteristic that defines democracy. These actions undermine democratic
consolidation processes, preventing further democratisation of the system.
Corrupt leaders are not really concerned with the rest of the population, or even their
country. The increased corruption leads to declining trust in a system and the state. In
a country with high corruption levels, the general public has no confidence in their
politicians and civil servants.

Not only does corruption affect economic development in terms of economic efficiency
and growth, it also affects equitable distribution of resources across the population,
increasing income inequalities, undermining the effectiveness of social welfare
programmes and ultimately resulting in lower levels of human.

Corruption undermines the institutional foundation on which economic growth depends.

Corruption lowers the quality of public services and infrastructure, distorts government
spending decisions, decreases tax and customs revenues and damages confidence in
the judiciary of a country.

Many countries with emerging economies suffer from a high level of corruption
that slows their overall development. The entire society is affected as a result
of the inefficient allocation of resources, the presence of a shadow economy,
and low-quality education and healthcare. Corruption thus makes these
societies worse off and lowers the living standards of most of their
populations.

With this I would like to conclude my script…..
